i am just new at this atving but what is a gear ration how do u change it anything i should now about it how much for whatever gearing.can i do it muself

 

u buy different gearing, its very hard to install though u cant be just some idiot and do it...

 

Sure ya can. I'd bet most people, given the right tools and a little time could change the tires on their bike. Unless by gearing you mean the ratios in your tranny in which case I'd recommend taking it to someone.

Outside of the tranny you can change your gearing in 3 ways. Tire size, rear sprocket, front sprocket. To make things real simple low gearing = reduced top speed/more grunt on the bottom. High gearing = less pull on the bottom end but higher top speed. To find out what gearing you have divide the number of teeth on your rear sprocket by the number of teeth on your front. This gives you the ratio of how many times the front sprocket turns for each turn of the rear. Say your running a 12 tooth front and a 42 tooth rear. 42/12 = 3.5 gear ratio. In other words for each time your rear sprocket turns once the front turns 3.5 times. Tricky part is remembering that bigger numbers mean lower gearing. Bigger tires will gear you up, bigger rear sprocket gears you down, and smaller front sprocket gears you down. Hope this helps.
