Raptor Carb Problems - Help!
#1
I had a sticking needle and was leaking fuel out the overflow so I decided to go through the carbs while I was at and check the fuel level. The fuel level was way too high according to what the manual says although it ran pretty well. It did seem to run slightly fat. I set my fuel level to be level with the mating surfaces of the fuel bowl. I checked all of jets and I don't believe there are any obstructions. Now it runs like crap and I am getting very frustrated. Idles fine but when you give it throttle it stumbles and pops like a lean backfire. I am certain its not getting fuel. I hate CV carbs. Can anybody help me fiqure out what the heck is going on?

My guess would be that either there was crap in the carbs and when you flipped them over to work on them it got into your jets or something is sticking.
I would double check the float level, if that looks good take the carbs off and give them a good cleaning.

Thanks for the advice sixsixT but I have already done that several times. I blew out all of the jets and cleaned it very well. There is something that I am not sure about and may be a problem. Each carb has a vacuum tube that connects to the runner between the carb and the airbox. If I blow into the left one the needle slide operate smoothly. On the right side, you need to blow much harder because air is coming out somewhere???

murph, mine did the exact same thing. My floats were EXTREMELY high compared to what the manual says. So I adjusted them to where the fuel level met the mating line and it did like yours, popped backfired and just wouldnt run. So I readjusted the floats to just about where they were but a little bit lower. Runs like a demon now.i believe if you turn the carbs upside down, they are set at about 8mm.

It sounds like the float level is to low and not allowing enough fuel into those carbs
reset it to the "improper" setting
before you put the floats back on give it a fuel source...move the floats by hand and make sure they are shutting off the fuel when depressed, but still allow fuel to flow freely(I bet yours just drizzles and pisses)
I think the problem lies in the angle the float affects the needle...any small adjustment makes a big difference...I was able to roll a "dimple" into the float tang(precise surgery) and get the correct float hieght and propper fuel flow

Wow no sh-t. I was wondering if that might be the problem. I guess that manual is as good as '01 gears. I will try that when I go home from work. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks guys.

Like RaptorJay said with the proper setting the needle doesn't drop enough to allow enough flow into the bowl, I corrected this on mines with my trusty "Dremel tool" and removed some material from the float stopper/catch to allow it to drop more, my floats drop enough to hit the bowl bottom which might rub a hole in them if the bowl was left empty and I trailered long distances, but so far it been working fine for me.

OK, this is what I did. I set the fuel level to be about 1/8" to 3/16" above the bowl mating surfaces. Checked to make sure the needles will let the fuel flow freely and it does. Now it runs like a champ. Problem fixed. Thanks for the help guys. YEE HAW. Tonight I ride!
