Cinders, YFZ & Raptor
#1
Just got back from the cinders and I just wanted to say that my Craycraft ran GREAT!!! If you don't know, the Cinders are in Northern Arizona, and the ground is composed of fine cinder rocks. Softer than the dunes and the main hills are over 600ft tall and steep. Most people run paddles, we run knobbies.
There were around 15 yfz's and I was not impressed in their hillclimbing ablility. They were barely moving at the top of the hill in first gear with paddle tires, wheras I was in third gear at the top and moving pretty fast. The one's without paddles barely got out of camp. Their powerband seemed to be similar to a two stroke. NO TORQUE.

The Semi-stock raptors and semi stock yfz's ran fairly similar depending on the rider. They were both faster than the predators. With paddles the predators could not climb the hills that me and the yfz's were climbing.

The YFZ must have been pretty stock. I can climb choke cherry in 3rd gear with paddles and that is one steep dune. It would take concrete and a near vertical climb for me to have to drop clear to first gear.

iluv2fly,
kracker is right dunes are totally different than the cinders. Riding in the Cinders with paddles is worse than riding in the dunes with bald knobbies. It is sometimes hard not to bury up in totally flat ground in some places.
RAPTORAZ,
Did you make it up to the cinders this past weekend? How does your bike run up there and what gearing are you using?
PredFan,
The reason we do not run paddles is because we love the challange. We could climb every hill without a problem with paddles. Their is only a few places to drag race up hills not like choke cherry or glamis (we would definitely run paddles if there was more drag racing). You really gain respect when you climb hills with knobbies that some cannot climb with paddles. The 4-stroke torque allows us to put the power to the ground.
