I'm new to the quad world. Been riding bikes for a very long time. I notice a lot of people talking about top speed. Whats the deal? Does it really matter what the top speed is? With bikes, we were more concerned with power. It is rare that the bikes are ever maxed out anyway. Just curious.

 

DE, I too come from the dirtbike world and its beyond me why they care about top speed as well. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img] It's really irrelivant since any of the sport quad's top speed can be changed with gearing changes. As you said who really cares what the "top speed" is? How often are you going to be able to get it Wiiiidddeee open in 5/6 gear to utilize it? Its all about horsepower and torque #'s......Now THAT would be questions that would be worth while.

 

Yeah, really. I mean, with my YZ-250 I would have no problem giving up 10 MPH top speed to gain a measley 3 HP. Top speed ain't gonna get you over that 30' double coming right out of the inside line of a tight corner.

 

Speed doesn't matter to me at all because around here you can only go so fast before that tree, rock or ditch bites you really hard.

It's the bench racers talk top speed. I've been riding since the beginning of recorded time, and whether my quad goes 70 or 80 or 60 makes no difference to me, it's the 0 to 45 that matters. You spend much time on a stubby wheelbase unit at those kind of speeds and you'll make the newspaper the wrong way.

 

Forget speed, right now, I'd be happy with just motion! Yeeee haaaw!

if i cared about top speed i wouldent of put 18inch turf tamers on my yfz. it has no top speed at all but i can get there in a damn hurry. whether i like it or not the tires dont seem to wanna touch the ground its weird. but bad azz.

If you never been to Glamis or especially Dumont top speed counts,i have been on dune rides with some vegas boys where i couldent go fast enough to keep up ,but that's the only place top speed counts for me is(DUne Rides) pinned in 5th for about 50 sec....

 

A balance between top speed and quickness is key to drag racing as one by itself wont win, so top speed by itself is useless if your still trying to gain speed after the finish line.
