What is the Difference w/ oil?
#1
I want to change my oil again on my Raptor and, was wondering if I can buy different oil than Yamalube 4.
I see different weights 10-w50, 20-w50, 10-w30 10-w40, 20-w40. What does it all mean and, what is the best weight for my quad? I noticed that nothing was the exact same weight as Yamalube 4 at any auto parts store. I forget the exact # but i think Yami4 is 20-w40 and, the closest i saw was 20-w50.
Also, what other filter can i run instead of the $22 dollar Yamaha oil filter... I see a bunch at the auto parts store but, they all look to long and, may hit your foot..
Thanks Guys!

Thank Moose for this......I saved it! Copy....paste! I personally run the Bosch 3300. I find them at Autozone for around $5. I also wouldn't mind finding a cheaper alternative to the Yamalube, but be sure it's right. Some oil will ruin the clutch. I run the Yamalube 20w40 for now! My dealer gives a discount on a case.

So will any 20-40wt oil be ok for the Raptor? I can't see what the difference would be. Oil is oil right? Yamaha doesn't put in special "Clutch Aditives" does it?
I figured i'd get s good brand name 20-40wt oil. But, the closest thing i've seen is 20-50wt. Will it hurt?

Most automotive oils can ruin your clutch. There are additives in them that are not suitable for a wet clutch. I'm sure someone with the actual knowledge will chime in soon. I just know there's a reason not to use just any oil.

The only oils you have to stay away from are oils that list "moly" as one of the additives. Its an additive that bonds to high friction areas to develop a higher lubrication ability at "hot" spots. That is obviously bad for clutches. Other than that no, theres nothing wrong with running automotive grade oils in your atv. There are some differences between manufacturers, but the "yamalube, belray, silkolene, etc" that your paying 6-8 dollars a quart for is just a good quaility synthetic/or castor bean oil with their name on the label. Its all marketing, and making the average joe think that if you don't run motorcycle/atv specific oil your motor gonna blow up. Sorry, but I call BS. Any quality motor oil that meets the minimum requirements for the vehicle will work fine.(hint: even generic walmart brand oil does this) What it all boils down to is how often you change your oil. Any oil has an expected life time, and it varies by the quality of the oil. If you change it before deterioration begins you'll never have an issue. I run 15w50 Mobil 1 fully synthetic, and have ran automotive oils for 11 yrs now with no problems. Rest easy and save some $.

K&N oil filter? Where do you get them? The LAME Dealers around here would never have something like that... They are lucky to put their shoes on the right foot.
