Default Sparks 690's vs. Craycraft 686 @ Cinders

Everywhere we raced and climbed this trip, the sparks bikes were faster. My bike runs exeptional but wow, I'm extremely impressed.

Our bikes are a tad different though and I'll run much better against them next time. We both ran the same knobbies.

Here are the differences: gearing was different, I was lower & I have and 01 theirs are 03's; I have a +6 and they have a +4 so I wasn't getting as much traction, but I'm pretty sure it did not matter too much because I beat them out of the hole and they came by me pretty fast and they were gaining.

This is the first comparison of the two bikes and this trip they were faster. For people that have been to the cinders we both flew up $100 hill in 3rd gear screaming and we did not encounter a hill that we could not climb with knobbies!!!

There was a semi-stock yfz buried up one of the long steep hills(Strawberry Bowl) about 2/3 of the way up. I pulled up and came to a complete stop, slid down a few feet, and asked if he was ok then took off and climed the rest of the hill. My bike seems to be a little more torqier than the Sparks bikes though.

Round One: Sparks wins (I have not given up at all though)

Are you running a mild Craycraft motor or high comp?

I am glad everyone has there toys back. Looks like it is time to toss the stage 2 cam out for a web 685.

Did the sparks come with the hi-rev cam?

Nothing should get stuck at strawberry bowk. Not even something like a Warrior or even a 250ex. Maybe there is a different strawberry bowl or somthing, but I can't imagine that.

thunderalley400ex - I have the high comp 686 w/ the stage two hotcam

14mins - The sparks' bikes came with a "midrange cam" it uses stock valve clearances. It has a very long duration and not much lift at all. What does the webb 685 cam look like and where do you gain the ponies? Right now I seem to have gobbs of low end which is great but I need some more top end. What do you think about slipping on a mbrp drag pipe and canning the moded CT pipe?

Kracker - There is DEFINITELY a different strawberry bowl. You are talking about the pissy little red bowls where everyone camps next to the long shallow hill. Strawberry bowl is in between $50 dollar bowl and Million dollar. It had a raptor w/ paddles and a new yfz stuck in the bowl. They had to take the road out. Have you been to $50 bowl? On the other side of $100 hill. There is a really steep red portion to the left if looking strait on. We all climbed those in third gear as well as $100 hill.

So what is it that makes the Sparks motors faster. Is Curtis that much better at porting than everyone else. Or is it that his "special" grind cams are more optimized for their intended applications. Inquiring minds want to know. Also, I'd sure love to see how those Craycraft and Sparks motors compare to a mildly built KENZ 727 with stock carbs. I'm sure we could entice a few other "Valley" residents to come out as well. What do you say, are those bikes ready for a trip into Phoenix for some friendly sand drags? Last year Sparks used an 11/1 piston, porting, and a high rev cam.
This year he tried different porting with a 12/1 piston, different porting and high rev cam and was slower than the previous bike. So he tried a midrange cam with that same engine and it flew. He deffinitely has his $hit together.

On our way back from flag we were kind of looking for "36th street". I've been invided up there to a wash to drag race is that where you go? And will you be making Glamis trips this season?

It could be a gearing problem......many guys gear their Raptor down unnecessarily IMO. Taller gearing makes the Rap engine work harder.

Raptor660Fam;

I was using the CT Pipe untill I put on the MBRP drag pipe. There is a day and night difference between them on the top end. Mine is a 12:1, Stage Two Cam, and it pulls hard on the top, mid, and low, with a 4 inch extended swing arm and 13/42 gearing.
