2000 Wolverine- engine break-in
#1
Hey folks...
Finally got my 2000 Wolv., and I am impressed!. This is a nice machine.
A havea couple questions for ya all, and I hope you can help me out.
1) What is the time required to break in the engine?. The manual says 20hrs. before you start to Pinit. Is there a simple method such as X-amount of tanks of gas?.
2) Is there a tach or trip meter which I can install onto the bike?. I'm going to do alot of travelling up North this year, and it would be nice to know how many km's I have on a full tank so I know when I have to turn back.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanx

When I got my Yamaha Big Bear, the dealer told me to run it for 15 hours or so under light conditions meaning don't race the engine and try to keep it going slow until the rings set in place....I would suggest running it in no higher than 3rd gear until you feel it comfortable to run fast....as for the spedometer, I know you can buy some kind of aftermarket kit for it...and it's relatively easy to set up.

20 hours sounds like alot to me, but it couldn't hurt. Just keep tabs with your watch. It doesn't have to be right to the minute. As long as you're close. You can get it in as high a gear as you like, as long as you don't get your revs too high. There would't be any sense in trying to just keep it in 3rd gear if you're going to be trying to keep up with your friends who are riding in 5th. You'de be reving the hell out if it if you try that, and the main thing is to keep your RPM's down low. If it's not too hot out, you can even let it idle in the yard for 20 min at a time when you're not riding.... just watch not to overheat it.

Although the above posts are very much correct, I would also change the oil and clean the filter immediately after the break in is complete. I did this after initial break in, and after modifying the motor. If you plan on using a synthetic which I recommend as do alot of others, wait until you have changed the oil twice with conventional oil or Yamalube. You will be surprised at the stuff caught by the oil screen inside the cooler line housing. After two changes run Mobil 1 synthetic. Dont worry, if my clutch doesnt slip, the stock Wolverine wont either.

I have 2000 Wolverine and my dealer said about 2-3 tanks of gas. I also had installed a speedo and tripmeter(one unit) it was about $175.00(nothing is cheap anymore). The speedo is made by Yamaha. I can easily go 50 miles and haven't even came close to using my reserve(F.Y.I.). Hope yours is as much fun riding as mine.
