Be very skeptical if you plan to purchase an ATV through ebay. The scams on ATVs and other items are rampant right now.
Here are some of the possible signs.
1. It is a pre-approved bidders auction.
2. The feedback for all the seller's previous items is good, however the items normally sold are totally unrelated. Example- 99% of the items are diapers, playing cards, pictures books - and then all of a sudden they have three quads to sell at dirt cheap prices.
3. The prices are extremely cheap with "FREE SHIPPING".
4. The supposed seller will attempt to contact you with an e-mail that says they only accept western union payment, you have to 100% accept their terms, and they try to give you a false sense of confidence.
5. A lot of these scams are listed using the "buy it now" on a 3 day posting.
6. The inability of the sellers to spell words in English in their e-mail responses.
In most cases, the original seller had great feedback and their account was somehow compromised (fake emails that appeared to be from e-bay, and just plain old password hacking.)
I've corresponded with a few of the scammers who had stolen pictures from other users and websites. Why, Just to **** them off and pretend like I was buying into their scam. Then I send them a nastygram and notify e-bay. I just hate to think these axxholes are ripping off hard working Americans. People that earn their money in the hope of buying a quad for a little R&R. These people are as bad or worse as the people that steal quads. And we all know those folks should be shot.
Well, that's my rant. Be careful bidding. Make 100% sure you know who you are dealing with.

Excellent advise, most scam auctions have several of the red flags listed here, they are very easy to spot and it almost sticks out like a sore thumb anymore. Hopefully these idiots will fade away.

eBay works hard to keep a clean nose, and I think they're catching a lot of these now. When I see one that's an obvious scam, I click on it and many times the auction has been nullified.
As for big ticket items, I sold a pickup on eBay for $15,500 and a guy flew to Missoula and picked it up. We corresponded enough before hand that he knew what he was getting (Supercharged F150 Lariat it was NICE). The point is, on a big ticket item you know right away when corresponding with the seller what the real story is.
Caveat emtor.

Yep, can't stress enough to coorespond with whoever the seller is. That gives you an idea of how helpful they are and some insight into the person. Feedback has limited usefulness. The guy who screwed me had 100% perfect feedback, guess he thought he could slip one by. The reason you want to coorespond with the seller via email, is that you will have a written record for furture use. Don't count on Ebay doing anthing to help you. They won't, and the way the site is set up, it slightly favors the sellers. I both buy and sell and have gotten somewhat familer with the rules.
