Default Craycraft 686 owners, need some advice !

I have a few questions, and who better to ask than you folks..

Ive decided to go with an 11:1- 686, stage 1 cammed build,
ported and polished, new rod and springs. Im gonna have Craycraft do it, because from what I
see, they are dang good

I see on their webpage, they list what goes into the 12:1 stage2 Signature 686, and it lists new
stainless valves and seals, and heat coatings and all that.

What is the importance of the aftermarket valves , and are they "necessary" in a mild build ? What
about the heat coatings ? How necessary for a mild 686.

Also, Ive read they do good carb mods to the stock carbs, would these be necessary for an 11:1 686, or
are the fuel needs of the milder 686 not as hefty.

I just want to get what I need, and not go overboard with things I dont really need. I drag race at local
events, and also ride recreationally on trails and for fun. Im in the hills of PA, and not a dune rider hence
the 11:1 with the stage 1 decision.

What do you 686 folk think about this, any advice will be appreciated much. Thanks ahead of time.

Pipeit- A Craycraft 686 with port/polish 11-1 and stage 1 is a very nice motor combo. I believe that raptor 03 was running that combo and did rather well at the strip. That is the best bang for the buck out there. All that would run around 900 dollars plus shipping. I believe that most would be happy with the performance that would give them. One of Bob Craycrafts personal raptors has that set up.

Appreciate it 14mins - I have pictured this setup in my mind for quite a while now, and Im soon going
to be making it final. Im just still wondering about the carb mods - and if Ill even need them with this
setup, and the valves and coatings. Im sure this stuff is optional and not included unless I want it...

I emailed Bob just a little bit ago, and Im sure he will shed some light on my inquiries.... This is basically
the final info Im debating, and if any of you 686'rs that have been through or have a similar setup would
like to add some advice or info, please do

if you do much drag race'n I would skip over the stage one cam and get a stage 2.........
I ran a stage one for a while and then i went to the stage two.........this thing feels like it pulls forever now.........
and from what I can tell I lost NOTHING on the bottom.......

I would also recommend a stage two. Not much more $, and from what I heard much more power. I have the stage two and have tons of torque (much much more than stock)

I cant say much about that mild 686 because i like it alot, mine is real fast so i cant wait for the signature kit that i will have in the beggining of next year,i cant say go to th stage 2 and 12:1 because my mild did so well, now when i go all out it's really going to whip up on people..

If you want to dominate go the stage 2 and 12:1 cam.. but if you want a fast bike that is reliable and a great al around bike do the stage 1..

You said you are going with a new rod???

I think that is great but, consider a few things if you do that. . .

If you have to split the cases anyways for the rod why not go 727 / 730 (the cases have to be bored for this larger sleeve.)

The big expense of the 727 / 730 is splitting the cases for the bore. If you are already in there why not go with the biger bore?

My Wife's Raptor has the mild 686. It has good power but, it won't be the fastest on the sand dune steep hills (at least not with my butt on it!)

I like the sounds of the stage 2 but, if I were to go with the stage 2 I would also do the rod and I would suggest a carb upgrade too.

The way I see it is this:
Option 1 - Mild 686 (stock rod, stock carbs.)
Option 2 - Stage 2 686 (+ new rod, + new carb(s))
Option 3 - 727/730 with the stage 2 cam and 12:1 piston (new rod + new carbs)

Big price difference between the stage 1 and the stage 2&3.

As for the coatings. I don't think they are that much. If they can help what the heck.

Option 2&3 require race gas. Many on the forums suggest running race gas on the Option 1 as well.

I totally agree with duneMe,

If your going "mild" then definatley dont put a aftermarket rod in it. If you are wooried about the rappy's stock rod,and decide to change it out for a stronger one, than spend the extra cash and get a "mild" 727.
