How to convert back?

Could anyone help me figure out how to switch back to the thumb throttle? I just purchased a 99 Wolvy that has a twist throttle and I want to switch it back to the thumb. I did find a website with yamaha OEM parts but they seemed very expensive. I have not spoken to any dealers yet as I think they will aalso be more $ than I am willing to spend. ALso after looking at it a little bit can I simply use the same cable and just put a new grip on? I did see a moose thumb throttle but it was like $125! ANy help would be great.

treestand,
first, congrats on your purchase. The wolverine is a great all around bike and I am sure you will be pleased with its performance. If you prefer to ride a thumb throttle you can purchase the oem parts from Riva Racing. I am afraid you will have to purchase both the throttle, cable, and some new grips. You see, the twist throttle you have will be using a ball shaped cable end. The stock thumb throttle uses a barrel shaped cable end. You will also have to replace your grips as a bar takes a 3/4" inside diameter grip and a twist throttle takes a 1" inside diameter grip. Be sure when you buy your grips you are buying them for a thumb throttle so they will both be 3/4" and not one of one and one of the other.
That said, I don't know if you have had any experience with a twist throttle but we have them on every bike we own (including two wolverines) and noone in my group would ride anything else. I am not trying to sway you, merely suggest that if you would give the twist a couple of weeks to grow on you, you may decide you much prefer it to a thumb throttle. Just a suggestion.
Hope this helps and let me know if I can be of further help.

Yeah the O.E.M. parts are high....I had a yammy dealer tell me the best deal in parts is buying a complete new machine....Your already seeing that...Try building a Wolvy complete out of the parts book and you'd have $20000 in it....Those thumb throttle are high becuase they easily broke in crashes...If you break the housing you have to buy the whole thing...I"d love to swap with you ...Ive been wanting a twist for mine...but we don't want to wait on shipping to ride...I know I saw a thumb throttle complete on e-bay
and you might try www.eastcoastatv.com. When ya get it changed send me a PM...I'd be interested in your twist throttle.. Hope this helps

Hey Kraw,
Just out of curiosity, Why would you want a twist throttle on a motorcycle but a thumb throttle on your atv. It doesn't make sense to me, I can't stand anything but a twist on any of my rides. I was just curious why a motorcycler would prefer a thumb throttle when he climbs on an atv.

I don't like twist either for one reason. If I pop the front end on a twist throttle, merely holding on will keep my wrist turning in the direction of more throttle. With thumb, your grip and your gas are 2 different options and you can hold for dear life while not affecting the throttle. At least that was my experience with both. I've only used twist on a motorcycle but I don't like it even then. I was on it wishing it was thumb like my four wheeler.

thomez,
I think you said that pretty good but there is no way I would want a thumb on my dirtbikes.

Do a search on E-bay for warrior thumb throttles. The I saw one just tonight that sold for 7.00 and 10.00 shipping.. I don't know where these people come up with their shipping prices, but anyway. If you find one, then all you have left is the throttle cable. Many and I mean many of the parts for the warrior will work on the wolverine. I know for sure that the 95 thumb throttle is identical as the warrior..all years. I am not sure if the cable end (connection to the thumb throttle) is different from the 95 to the 98's however, but a good dealership will help you out. If not, let me know and I'll ask my guy. He will even put a set of calipers on components for me since I do so much business with him. Great guy.
I just did a quick search for ya.."yamaha warrior throttle" and found 6.

I HATE twist throttles for the reason listed by thomez above, it makes riding a wheelie real hard w/o throwing it out from under you! no matter how powerful the dirtbike, i think id prefer a thumbthrottle over the twist, gives me more of a feel for the bike.
BTW, i think thats why the guy on the black banshee in heuvos 3 (hillclimb part) took the spill, i noticed when the front end was lifting up, and he was falling back, you can hear the engine revving, then it rolls, what a shame, it was such a nice banshee !! Just for my 2 cents...
I feel that riding wheelies is ten times easier with a twist due to my ability to control the throttle better. And as anyone who rides one will tell you, it doesn't take long to learn how to let off even when pulling back. It is very easy to move your wrist independantly from your arm and for those of you who don't move your wrists, you must have one heck of a rough ride. $0.02
