my new bike

Just open it up and go. If it's gonna break that's the time you want it to cause it's under warranty. When I brought my raptor home I pulled it off the truck and layed into it and runs just fine. Congrats on the new toy!

congrats on the new bike!
I still have the facotry oil in my Raptor, and I have about 18 hrs on it. Going to change it before or right at 20hrs, just like the manual says.
I wasn't realy easy on mine for the first 10 hrs. I didn't ride it hard for long periods of time, but I did ride it hard. My dad always taught me to break something in like you want it run later on. He was a cop and he always broke his cars in hard, and he said he usually had the faster car
As far as oil, I use Yamalube, simply because it meets all standards and is easy to find. I'll go synthetic one day I guess. Does Yamaha make a synthetic?
Also, where is Greewell Springs, Louisiana? Close to New Orleans?

You're right! I said go through the gears and deaccelarate. And I forgot to mention that the first 20 min is very important. You're taking me all wrong here. I'm not saying to run it wide open all day, but bring it up to redline like you said off and on. And heat cycles are fine too. But you have no right to say I don't know what I'm talking about. My Dad and i used to run a service shop and my Dad is OMC and Mercury certified. He taught me everything he knows so I do know a thing or two. So I sure the hell know what it takes to break a motor in right. But I found the harder you run them WHILE USING THE SAME PRINCIPAL the better they run.
I don't know a damn thing about quads, but I do know a lot about boats. It's not easy becoming Mercury certified and I trust Merc mechanics. They usually know thier stuff about most motors.

As for break in procedures. Don't baby the quad. You want the rings to seat as best as possible and the first 20-30 minutes is the criticle period here. Rev up through the gears at least to 3/4 throttle and decellerate through the gears allowing the engine to do the breaking for you, not the breaks. When the engine is under load is when the combustion gases get behind the rings and press them against the cylinder wall helping to seat the rings better. A properly seated ring will produce more HP than a babied or non properly seated ring. There's no real purpose for "heat cycles".

you guys are good!! Iused to wreck alot of street bikes in my day. all new. It was always fun leaving the dealers lot on one wheel which was usually spinning!!Break it in like your going to ride.If something is weak in my motor I want it to break under waranty.and you got to find out if the limiter works!!!!

well i got my bike over to my parents house to ride it this mornin and it feels pretty good. I've ridden for about 3 hours now. The most iv'e gotten out of it so far is about 3/4 throttle. there some noise thathat i hear comin from my chain. My dad said it looked like the two sprockets weren't lined up exactly straight but me and my friend thought it sounded like it was hitting the bottom chain gaurd under the back sproket from when the chain tightened and loosened from acceleration and decceleration. what do you guys that have one think.

I had to tighten my chain after about an hour of normal riding too. It's just the normal stretching of the chain. I got up this morning and rode for a while and the chain didn't loosen up anymore. It's just normal stretching. Do make sure your sprockets are lined up though. People do make mistakes when assembling the bikes. It's not uncommon, and is definatly worth checking out. But like I said, your chain will stretch, just tighten it a bit and you'll be fine. If the sound doesn't go away, call the dealer and tell them whats going on. They should fix it for you no questions asked. Did you take the pea shooter out of the pipe?
