"Priming" oil pump after rebuild - Raptor
Thats what I found RaptorAz - ( as Yamaha660R already said),
I first fired it up just to make sure it would start. It started right up and I
did let it idle for a few seconds. Then shut it down. Checked, and had
no oil circulating. Pulled the filter - dry. Checked resevoir, main pump line.
Oil was there, just not pumping. Prior to all this, I had put a quart in the tank,
and a quart in the top end thru the tappet cover.
Then I pulled the plug, cracked the weep hole, loosened the oil tank cap, and started
cranking it over. Nothing after a few minutes straight. I even hooked up the
the battery charger on trickle charge to have it turn over as fast as possible. Still nothing.
Then I filled the oil filter up as much as possible, and put it on hoping for some help in priming.
Nothing.
I really started to worry what was going on. Then I came on here and read a few posts, and in
a couple of them, the person gave a quick and short couple revs to get it going and it worked, so I
tried it. Cracked the weep hole and put the plug back on. Started it right up and gave it a
super quick but small rev rev , and oil spewed out the weep hole May not be the safest
and best way, but thats about the only option I had left !
Oh, also when doing the "plug out" cranking over... my resevoir kept filling and filling, and was almost at the
top - and I realized that it wasnt gonna work that way. The pump wasnt pushing it thru.
Kinda sucks that the system works like this - it sure doesnt seem normal, but oh well.
Whats funny is, on past oil changes, I would just stick 1.5 quarts in the quad, start it up, rev a little to circulate,
and fill the rest up. Always worked with no trouble. Just for some reason after a fresh motor build, I
didnt think to just do it like I always did. If I would have, I would never even know about it being hard LOL.
Good luck.
