Default Next step in power for Banshee after normal stuff?

Topic says it all, need more power. Got a '99 Banshee with Toomey's, K&N's, timing advanced like 7 or 8*. Looking for the next step for more power - Carbs? Port work? motor mods? I just ride recreationally in the SAND ONLY. I do a little drag racing, a little hill climbing, looking for reliability as well. Let me hear your ideas. Thanks, John.

I would say port work would be next, I know for a fact that gives banshee's a good raise in power. You could also put a coolhead on it.

You could have a local machine shop cut .030" off the head to raise the compression for about $15. Best bet is to have a reputable performance shop port the cylinders and cut the head to match.

I own an automotive repair shop and have a machine shop that could cut the head for me... WOuld that still be good running on pump gas just shavig the .030"?? I also know of a guy that does performance work for most of the bike shops around here, should I just let him do it all...porting and shave the head? What can I expect to pay for the port work? Thanks for the help guys. John.

I had mine milled right around .028" and it ran fine on 92 pump gas. It didn't give a huge power boost, but what I did notice is that it made it cleaner from gear to gear where before it might fall slightly out of the powerband.

I had Paul Turner hi-rev pipes and the airbox lid was without the lid. I went from 290 mains in the stock carbs to 320 just after milling the head. It ran nice.

If you want serious power, then port work is in order. If you're going to have it ported, then they will mill the head more and reshape the chambers. I can't really give an opinion on your local bike guy, but can tell you that with most of the big name companies a port job and head work, like I think you would want, will cost around $500.

Good luck,

Daren

There is more than just shaving the head, you have to adjust the angle on the squish band if you want to optimize it, although if you just shave a little it probably wont matter. If you really want some power get it ported.

At what point should you have the crank welded? I mean at what point in mods? If you had pipes, good air filter, jetted and then went and had it ported should you get the crank welded?

Launching hard (like on concrete or with really big paddles in sand or anywhere you have alot of traction) and revving really high pull it apart. If you do those then yes, its not really hp or mod based. Youll know its messed up though if it starts to vibrate.
