Default When are you suppose to put a Kodiak in low range?

I was riding with a guy on a polaris this weekend. THey told him to ride in low range most of the time. I put mine in low range going up a hill and smelt a burning smell. But couldnt tell if it was his or mine. We think it was his bc he got stuck in a creek and thought maybe a little water got on his belt. Should I leave it in high range most of the time or do I put it in low like the polaris. I have a 00 kodiak.

Leave it in high range when you are just riding around and going fast etc. Low is designed for towing, going through deep mud etc.

What he said... towing heavy loads, deep mud, climbing steep hills, etc.
