atv magazines

I am getting so tired of the pathetic attempts the atv magazines make to be informative reading. I feel this is a big part of the reason our sport is looked down on, because we appear as uneducated rednecks that can't write, can't spell etc. There are so many mistakes in the magazines it's ludicrous! And the one that really annoys me is, "all the machines in our test were so close we couldn't declare a winner so you have to choose the atv that suits you best." What a bunch of garbage. Go read a Car and Driver or Motor Trend magazine. You can tell these guys do their homework, they are educated top-notch writers who put a lot of effort into an extremely informative, and accurate read. All shootouts have winners; first place to last place. The atv magazines are a joke. "Oh, look at the new suzuki 1400 that some 5 year old created in photoshop." What a joke. It makes me sick. Just wondering if anyone else shares my opinion.

I prefer to look on the bright side and acknowledge that someone is actually putting out a magazine directed solely at the sport of ATVing. We could be in the same boat we were in a few years ago when atvs only got a mention in an MX mag once in a while. If you don't like the way dirtwheels or some of the others publish their articles, do something about it. In the same amount of time it took you to reply to this post, you could have written an email to the mag of your choice and expressed to them that you feel that their articles would be much better if certain points (such as a winner for each shootout) were included. I agree that ATV journalism isn't what it could be, but rather than sit around grouching about it... why not do something about it?

I used to read dirtwheels but I got to cheap to renew my subscription. I liked some of the tips they used to offer about quick fixes. I don't know if they still do that or not. I also agree about the shootouts. They need to be able to brake down what bike does good in what situation. I also think that they could review the bikes a little better. I am not too sure about what the "testers" actually do to the bike, but I would like to know if it is going to hold up over a 20-50ft jump. I wish I had the money to buy all the aftermarket parts and review them. Oh well.

I like DirtWheels but is it just me or does it seem like every new bike that comes out wins a few shootouts at first......lol!

It's called coperate marketing. Who ever whats the hipe has to pay up.
Pepsi or Coke
Ford, GM, Dodge or Toyota
Wal-Mart or K-Mart
If Honda wanted some good hipe and another front page they should take a picture of Ricky Carmicheal on the new 450R that will get a lot of people buying and talking just like Yamaha did with Jeremy McGrath

I believe DirtWheels is put out with a very minimal staff. They don't get very good support from the publisher, and that seems to show in the depth of coverage. Their readership is way up over the last couple of years, and I would think that they would be garnering more publisher support (i.e. funding) to take the mag up to the next level.
That being said, I've complained on here about their sophistication, or lack thereof. I wonder if it's the staff being spread too thin, or the demographic they are shooting at, or a combination of both. When you look as someone else said at a Car and Driver, the quality of coverage is worlds apart. But, the typical Car & Driver reader and the typical DirtWheels reader may be as well. (Don't anybody take that the wrong way.)
