yeah you are right. the mx and the mxr are the ones that wear out quicker than the others due to the softer rubber compound. the harder the rubber due to its ply rating the longer it lasts. the mx versions both have 2 ply rating which is very soft!

ply rating has nothing to do with soft/hard compound rubber

Ive heard they wear out fast, but I think the ones that do wear out are the MX versions. I ride on dirt roads (small rocks and loose dirt) and hit some small dunes, will these work out for me?

These tires hook up great and you should like them for the type of riding you describe. I plan to buy another set when mine wear out.

I am running the xcr-03's, front and rear. I love them, as they are as light as there xc 4ply, but are the xcr 6-ply, front and rear. Just a foot note to one of the posts above. The ply doesnt have any thing to do with the tread compound. Form my understanding, it has to do with the belts in the carcass of the tire. The ***** could still be soft. I can tell ya, mine are not near as soft as the mx tires, but they are still pretty dang soft. NO riding on the street for me!! But as far as riding in dirt, I love them, they work great!!

Try standing on a 6 ply xcr tire. They will hardly move. Then try it on a 2 or 4 ply, it will smush down. Its just the belts that are used in the construction of the tire, and how many are used. Also, how thick the rubber is on the carcass.
I fly in a KC-135, and our rear tires on that airplane are 28ply!!!!!! The fronts are 18 ply!!!!! Pretty nuts. But the tread is still not that hard. Its the construction of the tire that is incredibly hard.
You can actually run my 22X11X9 pure sport realters with no air, because they are 6 ply. Hardest tires I have come accross yet. Tread is extremely hard on those bad boys. THere great for snow riding!!

How would you compare the Stock Dunlops to some regular Holeshots? A friend of mine has some Cheng Shin Knobby look alikes and they are SOFT but they sure hookup great.
