1st mistake, "chevy for dodge". Dodge's are piles, I know, I own one. It's a 97 3/4 ton, 360 and pulls my 21' travel trailer loaded and two Raptors in the back of the truck up and down hills just fine. It's just a pile. Come to think of it, every Dodge I've ever owned has been a pile.

ALOHA yah, it is dune season and I have been puting lots of miles on the Rappy. Been ruffing it too. I need a new truck and a toy hauler!!!! Or maybe a motorhome to tow my flatbed trailer. I want an Avalanche with a duramax and 3/4 ton. Does chevy make that combo?

wahrdskin- Yes i know, sometimes i am a slow learner. I bought a new 97 dodge 1/2 ton truck in 97. The kid/wife and i went to North Dakota in it. It was about 2 months old. Traded it in while driving thru colorado for the new 96 chevy one ton. The dodge sucked. I did have it long enough for the cows to do some damage. For some strange reason a few cows decided to lick the side of the truck. It was not pretty

mistake 2- Traded wifes 99 cadallic in for a 2002 dodge crew cab dakota

mistake 3- traded 2002 dakota for 2003 1/2 ton crew cab. Wife told me to buy a powerstroke and i stopped by the ford lot. I just could not bring my self to pay 34,000 plus TT&L for a truck that i will not take care of. Now if it was a corvette maybe. lol

Of course the power is night and day in that trade. I've gone through 2 trannys in this Dodge so far. Both covered under warranty. The warranty has expired a while back, guess what? The tranny is beggining to screw up again. I don't want to turn this into a what truck is better thread, anything new is better than old, usualy. I've just had bad luck with Dodges over the years and I understand Dodge/Crysler trannys are a weak point anyway. Hope yours works out for you.

oh yeah their trannys suck didnt know that until i bought it but i also cannot see paying 35000-40000 for a new truck so if the time comes the repairs on the tranny will have to happen

This opens up your options on campers--you can find used 5th wheels very reasonable as opposed to toyhaulers which are spendy. And you don't have to deal with gas smell in your sleeping quarters, or re-packing everything to fit the quads in to leave, etc.

In CA, WA and OR you can't pull doubles (commies!) but I think all the other western states you can. The 2nd trailer tracks quite well, and the only thing is you can't back up all hooked up. Our 5th wheel is 22' and a 12' trailer with the wheelers. You can go up to about 74' total in most states. I can go 75 mph with all this stuff, handling is not an issue.

In California you can pull another trailer behind your fifth wheel. You need an edorsement on your license from the DMV to be legal. I believe it is only a written test, no skills test
