Blaster - top end rebuild frequency
#1
Blaster guys, I am debating the 2 stoke vs. 4 stroke issue and would like info on the following topic:
Assuming I ride a blaster recreationally (not racing) 2-4 hours a weekend and keep the air filter clean and good quality injection oil in the tank, how many hours would I typically get before needing to open the top-end and changing rings, and eventually the piston? Does anyone ride up to 200 hours w/o a rebuild?

My blaster is a 2000. I ride it every day and ride it hard. Sence i got it i have only rebuilt the top end ONCE and it didnt even need to be done. I was just bored and had the parts so i did it. The blaster can go along time with the same tip end expecially if you are just puttin around on it. I think my bike was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy past 200 hours after i rebuilt it and it still worked fine.

What he said. It's really not an issue, unless you're racing the nuts out of it constantly. I put rings in our '98 last year, the first time it had been apart. The do go a long time between needing top ends.
If you have a Banshee hill shooter that gets revved to the moon all the time, well maybe that's a different story.

Thanks, and that sounds good. What I don't understand is that if you ask the same question under the same conditions but about a yz250 (mx bike), those guys will tell you 40-45 hrs between rebuilds. Is that because the blaster motor is old tech and the yz250 has tighter more demanding tolerances? or does it have to do with the injection vs. premix?

That YZ 250 is making around 40 horsepower, while the Blaster is about 17. The pistons and rings are made out of the same stuff, it's just a matter of the differing amount of stress each is put through.

I've had my blaster for 8 months, and just rebuilt it last month. It didn't really need it, but I'm a throttle jocky and am always givin it to her. all i did was re-ring, hone the cylinder and a new piston.
