For that much you could get one in any year. But conditions will vary greatly. look for one that has been taken care of. Usually if the plastics are crap the engine was taken care of like crap. Also find one with some mods to it will save you a ton of money. And find one that has the least bored out of it. Take a compression guage to if you have one.

Here are some pretty smoking deals I have seen recently:

I bought a '97 banshee with new rebuild (I rebuilt it for the guy), new T5 pipes, handlebars, aftermarket wheels, new chain/sprokets, filter---$1000 ran great.

A friend bought a '97 with DG pipes, aftermarket wheels, nerfs, bumper, handlebars, that had the nut that holds the flywheel on come off and the guy thought it was blown up---$1000

Another friend bought a mid 90's in pieces but complete with extra wheels/tires, plastic, pipes and other parts---$650 and a '95 with just built FTZ motor, new carbs, new pipes, and in like new condition except tranny was locked up--$1650 Also a semi complete bike in pieces for $450.

And last night I missed out on two '87 banshees (friend of a friend of a friend deal). One was complete running and looked good the other was complete but the motor had been rebuilt and never finished putting it back together. The guy had owned the running bike for 11 years and it had never been tore down and was on stock bore. The "parts" bike was bored once and had not been touched for 6-7 years. The pair sold for $1500!

Now these are great deals that I have found. Also, there are many bikes around for $3000-$3500+ but I am just letting you know what kind of deals you can find if you know where to look.
