Does anyone else have a problem with diff. fluid spitting out of the vent tube and making a mess around the airbox snorkel?

Started doing that on the very first ride in the snow...

So far, figured out that the wheels spin much more than on dirt, so the diffs work a lot more and build a little pressure...

Since Yamaha was clever enough to make both front and rear vent hose end up just above the exhaust, everytime it spurted out, my wolverine would smell like burnt oil.

I made sure there wasn't too much oil, but it's fine, so I ended up doing the following:

I bought a 2-3 foot section of solid plastic hose (about 1/2 inch dia) and attached it to the frame on the opposite side from the muffler, going down from the carb to the rear of the foot peg.. I rerouted both differential vent hose to end up in that hose... Now if it must spurt out, at least it doesnt stink up other people and make a mess...

Other clever idea reported by another owner, drilled a little hole in the frame just around where the hoses are, same height, and popped the 2 hoses in the frame... The bottom of the frame already has some holes so the oil will leave the frame, pretty clever...

Only happens in winter time

I haven't noticed it yet, and do 90% of my riding through the Winter. I'll have to keep an eye on it since it's been brought up though.
Spring, Summer, and Fall are usually spent camping on the weekends and out on one of the bikes too.

 

Mine didn't do it until I rolled it for the first time[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img], same with my Timberwolf I used to have. I've heard its from over filling so I don't really worry about it, I might try the hose idea though-sound pretty slick.

 

Yeah, the hose thingy really helps...

I know mine was filled according to the book, (but it's been suggested that the book is wrong)

So now, with the re-routed hose, I don't notice it anymore, unless I stick my finger at the end of that hose.

And to be honnest, couldn't care less anymore, I just check the diffs from time to time,

I'm just happy it doesn't make a mess anymore, and even happier that it doesnt smell like a pile of junk... Cuz it really looks good, but the smell of burnt oil kinda killed the magic...

my grizzly will blow the front pinion seal out if over full happened twice now i bought the manual for another prob and while reading through found section on the diffs quote do not fill to bottom of plug hole always measure amount according to book and pour in!!!!!!

 

That's funny,

I have the shop manual from yamaha for my wolverine, and it clearly states that you have to fill it to the edge of the fill hole.

But then again, everybody I know has told me not to do it that way... Of course it was too late...

But since it did overflow from the vent hose a few times thanks to ol'man winter, I guess the level is back down to normal...

Logic dictates to check on occasion though...

does the oil quit coming out after it gets a little low or does it keep pumping it out if it just goes down a little and quits it might be worth it too leave it be and just keep a eye on it also when was your manual printed it makes me wonder if they changed to help the problem

 

Bought the manual last year, but I have to admit, I dont like it...

It's a reprint, and aside from the cover page, everything else is photocopies... I know it's from yamaha, but I was expecting something a little more professional looking.
And since it's a reprint, it was reprinted on 8.5x11 inches instead of the original format, so fewer pages, also means the index doesnt quite match the actual page number.
But when you need some info, I guess it's ok.

Now for the year it was printed, no clue...

Next time I change the diff oil, i'll measure the amount, see what level that reaches compared to filling up to the hole...
