what yamaha SHOULD have done..

WE all know about the craptor 350 that just came out- an improved version of the warrior right. Well, if yamaha wreally wanted a hit, what they should have done is take the old yz400f dirtbike motor, do some modds so it would work in a quad, and but that motor in the raptor 350. I mean, what a cool idea. I know it would be right up there with z400's. and knowing yamaha, they would probably find a way to make it faster then the 400 class competition. That really would be pretty cool.

Yeah, but a 400cc motor would have put them in competition with the 400ex and the Z400. It would have definetly opened another market for Yamaha. But I really like the looks of the new 350 Raptor, and I'm sure it's going to run fine. With the lighter set up, and little added power, it should be a very sweet quad for younger riders to break their teeth in with.

Well, I think Yamaha was smart in using the Warrior engine. They already had it and the aftermarket already has the stuff to upgrade what Yamaha didn't.
The new April issue of DW has more info on this newest Raptor than what I got from Yamaha in the press release last week.
The new Raptor350 has this...
A new Raptor660 style 36mmBSR carb
A new camshaft
A new exhaust
YFZ450 parking brake design
Handlebar mounted choke lever [finally]
It weighs 375 [compared to Warrior 397lb]
New dual rate front shock springs
Raptor660 rear shock linkage
Piggyback reservoir rear shock
Rear travel was bumped up 1/2"
45mm YFZ450 style footpegs
Footpeg mounts are moved down and backwards from the Warrior location
Will be available in April
Take into account where some of this info came from

The raptor 350 may not be for the speed freaks but I kinda think it's a brilliant move on their part. They took the best selling atv in the world, gave it cool styling and kept the price right for younger non racer buyers. The 350cc and under classes in GNCC should be full of them next year..

Ridley,
I think the quad you mentioned with the YZ250F engine is a great idea, but it wouldn't happen because of the price range it would fall in.
The majority of the 250F parts are the same as the 450F. If they were to build it, the only way I would see it being under $5500 would be to throw it an outdated chassis.......like the Blaster. Then you aren't any better off than buying the YFZ450.
If you ever noticed, all the OEMs using dirtbike derived engines have to keep the price ratio of the quad comparable to the dirtbike.
If Yamaha was selling the YFZ450 for $5000, you can bet the dirtbike guys would stampede on Yamaha headquarters.....LOL
The problem is that the only Yamaha single cylinder engines ever built are either the hi-po type like the YZF or dino engines[XT/Warrior] that weigh too much.
They need a new style 4 stroke engine [ala,HondaXR] that falls somewhere in the middle. I'm sure Yamaha knows this and has probally been working on it for some time. It's just a matter of when.

Take this into consideration, the TRX400ex's motor which was derived from the XR400 bike motor got smoked by the WR250F bike!! So take the YZ400F motor and stick it into a quad frame and it would smoke the 400ex but run with the Z400!
