Drag race gearing
#1
I was just thinking- let me know if maybe I am thinking to much
I have heard (or read) about people with built up Raptors, Banshees and such having to launch in either second or third gear when racing because first gear is useless because it revs to quickly. This means they only have third, fourth and fifth to race on. Seems to me instead of dropping one tooth on the front spocket as most people do - they should add teeth to the front or drop teeth from the back sprocket to bring their first gear gearing to match what it would be like when they launch in second or third. This would allow them to use all gears to race on instead of just a couple.
What do you think?

A couple guys here run real high gearing to run 1-3 in the 300ft drag. I use stock gearing and run 1-3 and sometimes hit 4th at the very end. Others like to drop 1-2 teeth to launch in 2 and run 2-4 in the 300ft. All up to how you race and what kind of power you have to the ground.

I start in 2nd and end in 5th, most people at the track do this too. In dirt, to gear it low enough to leave in first comfortably i would probaly end the track in second. I think you should go faster if you end in a higher gear, even if its at the same mph as lower gearing, since you are accelerating faster.

I go from 2 to 4, generally when I'm hillshooting I just start in 2 and hit 3 bout a quarter way up and rev that out never getting into 4.

Dont forget about tire rollout. A tall tire will help keep you from shifting down track. That's been a drag secret for a long time even with the cars. Gear it low for a hard launch and run a tall tire. The rpms will stay down at the end. Not saying you want to gear it low on a wheeler, but with the right gearing and a tire like the pro-wedge or 4-snows that will grow, you wont have to spend a lot of time shifting and can use the motor on the big end.
