cherokee rear diff?
Either the differential is low on lube, check the fill hole,it should leak a little lube out when you take out the plug, or the backlash on the ring and pinion is off, this could be due to a worn pinion bearing, loose pinion nut (the big nut that holds on the driveshaft yolk to the diff ), or it could be worn parts in the rear end. The fact that the noise goes away when you let off the gas points to a little slop in the ring and pinion, if you're not a mechanic, checking those parts for proper tolerance is best left to a repair shop,or trusted mechanic friend.

cherokee rear diff?
Yes, it does sound like some Ring and Pinion problems to me. But since it is a 1994 I would rule that out. Unless the cherokee has had a rough life. Then we have other problems. My 90 YJ with a D35 rear end has had no problems. I have not even snaped an axle shaft, but i keep waiting for it too .... If you do not plan on wheeling this jeep i would say dont get the D44, just get your D35 reworked.
I am not sure what an SE has on it. HAve you done any modifications to this Jeep? Is it an Auto or manual. Are you sure it is the rear diff?
