I painted my parts during the winter, my garage is heated and i let them dry for a few months... This is very important make sure the header is very clean sand it with 180 grit sand paper at first then go over it with something light like 400 grit, then clean it again with lacquer thinner(to remove any grim etc) then paint..

I painted my header with high temp paint. So far its held up I have really only ridden the thing one time since I have painted it but I started it over the winter a few times and it hasnt done anything funny yet. Take a look at my page below there is a link and once in the site check out Bill H there are pics and at the bottom there is a before and after of it. I painted it, put it back on and started it the next day. It will just smoke a little that is typical though of anything like that goes away fairly quick.

i paint by trade for the last 20 year's and i have all the spray can's in the world, most don't last that long. PJ1 has been the best lately. i'm sure one or two companies make all of the paint can's they just put different label's on them. VHT spray can's are good too.
i have a 67' GT fastback with a hi-po 289 pretty much stock except for full length headers(flat black paint)bigger carb, high comp' piston's.320hp. rust isn't that bad of a color, easy to keep. a little wd 40 will work.

I painted mine with VHT 1200 or 1500 degree header and exhaust paint. It wasn't fun, but after sanding the entire system, and then laying on about four coats with a heat cycle in between it looked better than factory. When I had my Rappy, I found that using Silkolene pro prep on the pipes kept them looking cleaner and like new longer. After I would wash it, I would wipe the pipes down with this stuff and they never went back to looking rusty and mud didn't seem to cook on them.
