Yamaha Blaster running weird..
#1
My blaster cuts out, but I notice if I put my hand over the air intake which is under the seat and it runs fine...I put a small cloth in it and it screams again...The Blaster is a 2000 model with 20 or so hours on it, I am thinking about trading it for a bigger utility type machine with reverse. What kind of trade in value do most dealers allow or would be better to sell it to a individual..Many thanks.

check your jetting. it might be a little off. sounds like it is getting too much air and wants to run crappy. mine cuts out when there is too much air flow to it. Check with your jetting and then see if it is sucking air in somplace.

you have four basic stages of throttle. 1/4 - 1/2 - 3/4 - full. Take your bike out and test each of these different stages of throttle and find out when it is running bad. Then once you figure that out then you will need to adjust the jets acordingly. The pilot jet and air screw are for the 1/4, the needle for 1/2 and the 3/4-full is the main. you will need to adjust the jet that controls the throttle where you are having problems with

this means your jetting is too large. when my blaster was stock, and i removed the lid, the 230 main jet couldnt handle the amount of air. i then took off the lid and replaced the 230 witha 250. it works great. u need to go down tho it sounds like. if u bought it like this, i would guess the person had parts on it and had it jetted high, then took the parts off and never rejetted it to what it should be before he sold it to you

All you have to do is take the bowl off your carb and you will see 2 jets, the big one in the middle is the main and the other is the pilot. all you have to do is go to a local shop and buy a smaller jet, unscrew it and put the new one in. its really easy. Try going down on the main first. Im still wondering why your bike would be running like that if it was only stock. Your engine might be getting extra air from somewhere and this could be a serious problem if its un-filtered.
Check the whole air track, take the filter out, intake boot, and make sure there is no holes in them or in the air box and this might fix it.

ill walk you throught it thouroghly. hes what u do. take off ur carb, much easier this way here we go. first, turn off ur gas. then look at ur carb. u will see a round large **** with nooks on it. then there is a gold little piece facing that ****. lossen the piece with a phillips head screwdriver and slid it to the side. then with channel locks loosen up the large ****, and unscrew it the rest of the way with ur hands and remove it carefully. then, on either side of the carb, there are clamps. use a phillips head screwdriver and loosen both them up. then take off ur oil lind and gas line, and out comes ur carb. take it to a table or whereever u can work on it. then flip it over and loosen up the 4screws on the bottom of ur carb. carefully take off the bowl. then u will see ur main jet right in the middle. unscrw it carefully and put in ur new one. 6mm wrench is what u need. then reverse the process to install it back into ur quad. any specific questions ask me specifically.
