I'm not saying there was absolutely no detonation going on but I know that with him and Sam having had this happen in the past he was cautious and looking out for it not to happen again. The pistons are VERY thin where the crack developes and I think a better piston would be fine under the same circumstances.

Is it very easy to tell if you have burned a hole in your piston? Like smoke pouring out? Makes me glad I started to run a mix of 110 and 91 when I'm spraying, when I first had it I was running 91

Before I would call any company's product "junk", I always want to know what the other side is saying.
Have you called JE and got any response. I can understand a couple bad pistons but if they take care of their costumers then all is cool with me. I wolud think JE would know what is going on exactly.

Those are definatly detonation pictures Mitch. A lean condition would show what would appear to be melting along the edges of the hole I have, yes? Which it does not. Either way, I'll be double checking the timing, check the key on the flywheel and run higher than 100 octane, probably sunoco 110 with the new piston. I gave Sam a pm, I'm just going to get his 12:1.
Wow, this is news to me bro. How did you know that this has happened before you lost the whole piston??? Can this happen to any engine if not jetted correctly or is it just the timing? Also, I have seen this before but was on a bike with NOS and it just pitted the piston and head all up just on a couple of runs. Thats the only thing that steered me away fron NOS.

The only thing I don't understand it why? Only 11 to 1 and you should be able to get by with pump gas, but you say you ran 100 oct?
Can you get a real closeup of the plug that came out of this thing? Head too? By the way; nice clear pictures!!!

I totally agree.....if you line the piston up to the head the way it came out....would the plug aim to the hole in piston #2

Yep, as well as piston #1.

The first piston failure showed me signes by having oil come out the crank case breather hose a little at a time and gradualy getting worse, until I finaly opened it up to find the hole.

The second showed no signs, running strong and then just dieing once the crack turned into a hole.

Bartlett, the area you outlined is carbon build up. The head is not pitted etc in that area. I'll get a close up tomorrow and clean the head and take another picture.

wshrdskin I have a few questions for you if you don't mind?
#1. Was this a forged piston? I can only assume yes it was.
#2. Did you ever mix your fuel with pump gas? This one is very very important. The reason I ask is because your good plug picture shows carbon like I have never seen using ANY brand of race gas. I have used about 5 or 6 different brands and they all have shown up "dove gray to light dove gray" on the plug and pipe. Your plug looks like regular old suckie rag head pump gas. Are you getting it from a good source? I was ripped off once on that deal.
BartlettRacing is looking exactly at what I was looking at. And what he said about the piston is true. Would a beefier piston lasted longer? Sure, but it also would have went away too and the weight might have pulled your rod in half sooner also.
This thread is VERY interesting to me. Keep up the good pictures and look at the things that people have suggested and you will solve your problem. Believe me, this is not a piston problem, but a problem that is causing a piston problem.
