The reason for the single back tire is a lot of states will not allow a 4 wheel vehicle to have a solid rear axle. By making the rear single tire there is no rear axle. Not sure if you have seen them but a company in canada sells a trike that is set up like that but really cool looking its call the T-Rex.

Yes, T-Rex is built by Campagna Motorsport in Plessisville about an hour from my house. The T-Rex is consider a motorcycle like other three wheeled motorcycles. Instead of having two wheels in the back and one in from, it has two wheels in front and one in the back powered by motorcycle engine (use be to a Suzuki GSX-R 1100 engine, but now, they have putten a more powerful Kawasaki ZR-1200 engine) in a indy or Formula One style **** pit. And yes they are extremely cool and quick!!!
