Why do ATV have age guidelines and dirtbikes do not??

History.

Way too many riders got injured and killed on ATVs in the early to mid eighties which caused ,then Tennessee senator, Al Gore to create a committee within the CPSC to look into into a possible fix. The conclusion was that the CPSC and the OEMs [voluntarily] set forth age guidelines for it's dealer networks to follow involving ATV sales along with a new standard of warnings that are to be applied to the bodywork of the ATVs in clear view of the rider.

As crash often as the dirtbikes tend to be regardless of the rider's skil level, you just don't ever hear much about someone being killed on one. Plus, their sales numbers combined doesn't equal to the sales numbers of ATVs sold by just one manufacturer.

The YZ125 being fast has nothing to do with it they go mainly by motor size. For example look at insurance rates on cars the number of cylinders is what counts to them not how much power it makes same for quads. kind of a bad analogy but do you see my point?

Thats a really good question...... You would think more kids would be getting hurt on bikes compared to quads. (wheelies on bikes and jumping them etc. thats kinda what they are made for)

If they outlaw ATVS for youth I can almost guarantee the kids will switch to Dirtbikes. Can you see where this would go?......... The same exact thing we are experiencing now with kids on ATVs.

as for the yz125 going as fast as a 300 or 400 sport quad, I can see it. Those 125's rip for their size!

And to make things clear, I am against banning all ATV's for children. All they need is the right size, discipline set forth by the parents, and supervision. Also a ATV Saferiders course for children wouldnt hurt. Maybe the ATV rider course should be mandatory or children who get a ATV, or new riders of any age for that matter.

I'm not sure of the reasoning behind the motor size / age restrictions.

But I can somewhat agree with them to a point. A new house was just built a mile or so up the road from mine...It came with a young boy...maybe 10 or even younger and a huge grizzly 4x4. The little guy rides that thing up and down the road all day long. He can hardly touch the floor boards. If he manages to get it stuck or tips it over...there is no way he is going move that thing. He looks out of control on it.

My wife and myself are waiting for the day that the emt's come flying up the road to help him. My wife is getting ready to go talk to the new neighbors....But if they are willing to let the young guy do as he pleases. I can only imagine the response we will get if we intervien.

One plus for the kid is that he wears a helmet. But the downfall is shorts and a tank top with a great protective pair of sneakers.
