A friend of mine was riding his 02 Warrior and after a couple of hours there was a bang and a jolt under the seat, he got off thinking he had thrown a rod or something in the engine, everything looked good, took the seat off to find out his battery had exploded and was in five different peices. The quad had been ridden 2 hours in the last 6 months and he takes good care of his machine which is stock except for pipe and jetting. What could have caused this mishap? the battery is original and was showing no signs of drainage in the past. Any ideas as to what could have cause this to happen?

 

Maybe it was getting over charged, something shorted.

nah it couldnt have got 2 hot, cause i have rode mine for like 4 or 5 hours at a time and it hasnt every done anything like that

 

It was probably discharged before the ride, and while he was riding it was recharging, and when a battery charges, it gives off hydogen gas...which is very explosive. The vent on the battery may have been plugged, but probably something sparked, and set off the hydogen gas.
Tell him to rinse the area well... or things will corrode real bad, then when he gets a new battery put in, check the chargeing voltage, to make sure it isnt too high.

He's cleaned the area up, he's very **** about keeping his toys clean and in good working order, changing oil every 20 hours, lubing all points every other ride so it wasen't something he neglected. He's looking at buying a sealed battery as opposed to the stock warrior unsealed battery, and I'll inform him about checking the charging voltage. I'll pass on your reply about the vent possibly being plugged, the vapors have to go somewhere or kaboom [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif[/img] Thanks to everybody for the replys.
