Default Proper way to check plug?

I just finished adjusting the valves and cleaning my carbs on my 04 Raptor. I took it for a test ride just to make sure everything sounded ok and worked ok. I didn't notice any excessive valve noise, and the bike seemed to run very good. I get back home, shut it off, and check the plug. It was very white, which is not cool. I put in a brand new plug before I took it for the ride. Is there a proper way to check the plug? I am hoping that maybe I am checking it at the wrong time or maybe since it is a brand new plug I have to get a few rides on it first. Do you check the plug right after you turn it off, or do you wait a bit or what? Also, if it is white cuz I am running lean, how do I richen it up a bit? I know there are air/fuel screws, but I don't know where they are or which way to turn them or how much. If you guys could help me out on this I would appreciate it.

Did you give it time to get up to operating temp? To get the most accurate read on the plug go WOT in 4th or 5th and kill it and let it coast to a stop, then check the plug. If it is still white, you may have a small air leak, but if its running good then I doubt it. While its sitting there idling, spray starting fluid on your carbs and carb boot, and everything else you had apart, if the idle raises or lowers you have an airleak.
