I got a 686 (685.95) that was home built by a man trying to make a name for himself. He is a service manager at a yama dealership. This engine he built me will rip. I've run several sparks 690's and trinity 727's. I literally drive around them on the sand, and I still got stock carbs and ignition. Been trying to get it set up for dirt dragging, my set up for the stock motor is not enough. Best passes so far in 300' fall in the high 4's. Once i can make not stand up and bite down the track, i'll put the NOS back on.
The guy that built it for me does awsome work. Fully ported the head and replaced all hardware, high-end Web cam, bored block, installed aftermarket rod and 12.5:1 JE piston that he helped design, part# BFR 103 i think. He also had to replace my starter clutch and cut me some street bike clutches to fit my basket. Total at the end of the day $2,300. Alot of money, yes, but now it runs like crazy.
I would definately say, if you got the money to send it to a big place like trinity now, save a little more money and get it done somewhere that really takes time on it, not just dips and flips it.

You can get a full craycraft 686 for $1600. but that doesn't include carb's or a rod change. If you can get the carb's to flow enough you don't have to get fcr's, and the rod is a piece at mind part to change. But it's your money and and your choice on what to get, but the customer service alone is worth the extra $$ compared to Trinity.
