does any one know what kind are in west virginia? I had one attack my raptor. lol it was funny but it kind of worryed me what if it decides to attack me instead. Well short version of story is i was riding down a trail and it jsut jumped out of the woods at my front tire and then agian at my rear tire but i was kinda far by then. It missed both times but was pretty scary. Then me and my buddy stoped in a opening abotu 15 feet after and the snake was in the attack postion in the middle of the trail. i guess it tought or felt i was attacking it but it was really agreasive and didnt run into the woods on the side of the trail but stayied out. My friend thinks it had a nest and was protecting it but i dont know? Any ideas?
It was a long black snake? dont know if it had a rattler didnt stay around to find out and not sure on what else?

There are several differnt kind of snakes here in WV. We do have rattlesnakes, copperheads, water snakes, and black snakes.
The black snakes and the racers(a racer is a black snake with a yellow stripe or two), and they can be aggressive but they are not poisonous or dangerous.
The rattlesnakes are very dangerous and obviously are aggressive if provoked.
Copperheads are a brown colored snake, and are venomous. They are not as deadly as a rattlesnake, and average death by bite is 1 in a 100 die from a copperhead bite.
The watersnakes are usually poisonous and can be found around creek's, rivers, and ponds.
We also have gardener snakes which are not poisonous or aggressive.
A good rule of thumb......leave a snake alone, and he'll leave you alone.

Rattlesnakes are easy to identify. they have arrow style heads, and are usually black, brown, and they have a rattle on the end of their tail. The rattle is easy to identify, even if it's only a "button" style rattle(which is small).
The water snakes wouldn't be found in small puddles or on a trail. They are usually brown and yellow. They are usually found on pond edges, in creeks and streams. They usually hide in the water under rocks, or under the creek banks. They are not aggressive and will avoid you at all costs.

Snakes often bask in the sun on the trails. I sometimes ride over them when they dont get out of the way in time. I have a habit of finding snakes whenever I go riding. I generally have to go looking for them though.
