The Raptor is a good all around quad, too. It is heavier, but only a little, It doesn't handle quite as well as the Z/KFX, but it still handles pretty darn well. It has tremendous power, torque, and it's drivability is outstanding because of it...
I was leaning towards the Z400, a couple of my friends have them, and I liked them alot. I did not ride a Raptor before I bought one, and I can tell you, I really feel I made the right choice.
If I had rode the Raptor after buyin the Z, I think I would have been bummed out. I feel the Z is good bike, but for me the extra power and plush ride of the Raptor is the way to go. I would hop on and ride the cr@p out of a Z/KFX anytime, but my money went down on the Raptor and I happily never looked back.
Even if your a beginner the power of the Raptor is by no means intimidating. Remember, it's all what you do with your right thumb, just like driving a car is all about what you do with your right foot. Control, is everything.
Having said that, I really love my Praire 700 even more.....I call it point and shoot, being automatic and all. Yeah the Raptor is way cool on the sand and a lot of the other riding I do, but the P700 can carry a bunch of stuff on it's racks, and go everywhere too ... etc.... and talk about a smooth ride........oh yeaeh, back to earth.....buy the Raptor....

Go with Raptor, is a very hard and costly to make bigger cc engine later on. If you go with 400, pretty soon you"ll want big bore kit and they are not cheap. With raptor you are already 260 cc upfront. No matter what, cc in engine is what make power. But otherwise 400 is nice looking quad. IMHO

lots of utilities, blasters, and a 250ex and they were all extremly boring. i felt they had no power or torque ive ridden some snowmobiles and those are fun, i want something like that. they were 600cc 2 strokes and they were fast and fun. i want something like that but it dont snow enough for a snomobile and i love atvs. i just want one that will have the speed and the rush that a snowmobile gives you

I was between the two also. I chose the Z400. The seat is super comfy and has plenty of power for me. I'm 5'4", 114lbs. For the sand, the Raptor would probably do better, since it has more power. It depends on your preference. They're both great quads. The new 2005 Z400's have gas shocks, bigger carbs, etc., but you'd save a lot buying used. It's really your call. If you think after getting the Z400, you may someday want more power, maybe go with the Raptor from the beginning. But if the Z will be enough for you, (which it already is plenty of power for most of us), go with the Z. I started with a 250 Ozark and wanted more after a year. Mostly I wanted a sports model though I think...lol. Go sit on both of them. Check them out. If you get an opportunity, ride them, if you know anyone who has either. You won't be sorry you did all the research you're doing.
