raptor piston question
I got a couple runs on it last night at the track after the install, and I'm going to do a couple runs on it today in the yard, and I will post a full ride report with the details. So hold tight for awhile, and look for the full report tonight......but so far so good.
BTW...shmave is you want a Ross 11:1 102mm(686) piston I have one I can sell. It's got around 2-3hrs on it. PM if you are interested, or email me at gytr_660r@yahoo.com

Please tell us what your budget is? That will determine what advice is right for you.
You will get more out of your Stage 1 cam with a higher compression piston. That is true. The bigger cam can give you more power, but it also shifts your peak power to a higher RPM range. The higher compression piston will give you more power, but it will shift the peak to a lower RPM range. Using the both together you get the best of both worlds.
Go too high on the compression and you will have to run race gas all the time. This can get very expensive and also be a pain in the rear if there is no place close to you that sells race gas.
The Ross 10.75:1 piston will run fine on 92-94 pump gas in most applications. The JE 11:1 and the Wiseco 11:1 will almost surely need at least 100 octane (or 50/50 mix of race/pump gas). With race gas running anywhere from $4-10 per gallon that could get pretty expensive.
I would recommend a Ross 10.75:1 along with your Hotcams Stage 1. That is the combo I am using right now and it really rips. You will like it.

I took the easy way out and got a 10.5:1 Weisco and run premium. I can easily take my buddy with the identical set up less the piston up hills at the cinders or the dunes ( and I outweigh him by 30lbs). Im not sure what the correlation between higher compression pistons and reliability is. The guy who rebuilt my tranny and installed the piston while things were in pieces pushed me to this piston and convinced me that I wouldnt take a reliability hit and its cheaper to run premium than race gas. Time will tell on his advice but so far-so good.

I have used a variety of sizes & compression ratio pistons from both Wiseco & JE with no problems at all.
By themselves, if you know what you are doing, Wiseco & JE pistons don't cause your rod to fail. They don't cause your head gaskets to blow. They don't cause any problems unless a lighter wallet is a bad thing? If you just want to use an 11:1 piston with stock sized valves, Wiseco pistons are fine. If you want a bigger selection of compression choices & want to use oversized valves without having to machine the piston itself, then JE pistons are fine.
If NHRA drag racers use both Wiseco & JE pistons making 6000+ HP, maybe they aren't so bad?

well I'm trying to keep the prices down so I can spend in some other areas but I don't want to buy something that I'll have to replace before I would on normal wear and tear wiseco sounds like the way I might go but I'm still confused on what compression to use I don't mind buying race gas I already use it in some of my other toys, thanks again

Thanks for correcting me MadDog. I knew the JE was higher compression than advertised and ususally needed higher octane. I don't know why but for some reason I thought the Wiseco would require it too.
Knowing that your Wiseco runs on premium makes me feel better. Since I got my new Ross I have only run VP U4 fuel. I have been kind of scared to try pump premium, even though it is supposed to be fine. I don't think I would know if there was a problem until it was too late. I can't afford to keep paying $35 each time I fill up my Raptor's gas tank, so I am going to try premium real soon.
