Chain driven quads are the best.You just have to maintain them.Every few rides you should take kerosene and a toothbrush and clean it real good.After every ride you should lube chain.You also have to check the slack in your chain and keep it at the right adjustment.Sounds like your dad just rode and never tightened chain.If you run out of adjustment you need to relace it.
