Alright 4X4 guys... Kodiak?
#1
I haven't worked on Kodiak's that much and have a few questions. I went over dads and helped him adjust the valves and change the oil in his Kodiak (2000) Sunday. I drained the oil with the big plug right in the middle/ underside of engine (after I cleaned the oil up out of the floor, that is like the largest plug I have ever seen LOL), and after we were putting the old oil in a container we noticed a spring and a screen in the old oil. He picked up some more oil and we are going to put it back in today, but here are the questions...
1) What is the spring/ screen for? Does it go for the oil pump, or oil pickup? Or has it droped down in the case from somewhere else? Just haven't seen anything like it.
2) There were a few metal shavings and ALLOT of a material that looked like clutch. Any idea what that could have been? I know SOME metal shavings can be expected and it was minimal, but the dark brown hard material was abundant. You could break it with your fingers but it was hard, it wouldn't crumble though.
Thanks,
Mike

No worries. The metal screen just goes in when you the put the drain bolt back in it. it is not from anywheres else in the engine. It keeps crud out of your engine.
Also on my kodiak 450 there is another drain bolt for the engine just a little more to the rear of the BIG drainbolt. It lets oil drain out from another part of the engine. I would think that the kodiak 400 has the same setup. Make sure you put it back in properly! The metal flakes are just from the break in period of your dads kodiak. It is new right??? if so this is normal. I had the same thing with my kodiak 450. It takes a couple of changes to get the metal, ceramic like, flakes out.
If you have any more questions about the metal stuf maybe ask the mechanic at the dealership he got it from.

Thank you,
I am going to put the sceen back in this eveining, and we are going to run it for a while and change the oil again to try to flush any of the other "flakes" out.
Thanks again for the input, I was getting worried LOL... When I take the plug out of the rappy parts don't fall out!

kodiakowner,
I was wondering about that spring and screen when I changed my oil and I did not see it in the oil and now I know I must have pulled the other plug. I was reading the manual and it said to make sure I put it back in and I was thinking that Yamaha forgot to put it in to begin with.
So how is the job working out at the dealer?
Went out to do some scouting for moose season with my boy and we saw a Lynx trying to pounce on some baby Loon's. I have noticed my Kodiak has not been getting very good mileage when I head back into the mountains. I am getting about 40 to 50 miles to the tank before reserve and when I ride out in the sand dunes I get 50 to 70, is that about what you get on your's.

I havent really checked my mileage and probably should. I always take a 5 litre jug with me on the longer rides just so I can get myself outta trouble if it happens.
working part time right now cause i have set up everything in the yard.... for now till the next truck comes.
