My 2001 Drag Raptor still feels brand new. Tranny and Oneway still kicking with
no signs of failure. 3 years of trail/ hill climbing, a full year of drag racing while just
piped, and now almost a full season of dragging with the 686 build. Its a champ.
I LOVE 2001 Raptors - if you find one with no apparent signs of a weak tranny or oneway,
then I say go for it. My personal opinion on the bad tranny - I think normal operation and
use wont hurt a thing, but I do think that the dogs in the 2001 werent designed to handle
the powerful "kickbacks" that you get on occasion when stalling or starting. Also, if you
slap it into reverse with the quad still moving, or not at idle - these components get
SLAMMED hard, and I think they couldnt handle it. So yeah, this is still a flaw on Yamaha's
part, but it can also be avoided with a little care by the operator. Im sure pavement racing
and big jumping also puts stress on these parts also, so it is a design flaw - but explains why
some make it and some dont. JMO - Id still buy a 2001 if it felt fine !
