Uhh, no. The electoral college is the only thing keeping New York and California from electing presidents the rest of the states don't want. This country is a democratic republic, not a democracy. Popular vote is not the way to elect the leader of a union of states. To want that is no different than wanting rid of the senate, keeping only the house of representatives. After all, the house is based on population, the senate is not.

each state gets there electoral college votes by the number of people in their state plus 2 votes for the senate.. so California has more votes than say my home state Utah meaning California has way more pull than Utah based on population, not on an equal number of votes for every state which would keep a state with more population from giving more votes to a candidate. this being said i restate the electoral college is a joke .do you know no constitutional provision or federal law requires electors to vote in accordance with popular vote. 60%of the popular votes could go to bush 40% could go to Kerry and legally they could put Nader in the white house and it would be legal .also only 2 states Nebraska and Maine do not follow the winner takes all rule, meaning in the Texas electoral college if 40% vote for bush and 60% vote for Kerry all the votes go to Kerry rendering all the votes for bush meaningless and in essence every body in Texas has to vote for Kerry?i say the electoral college should be bound to popular vote and the winner take all rule be thrown out the window just to make everything fair ,these of course are my opions and i don't claim to know everything and i welcome all opions i am just stumbling through this universe like everyone else but hell don't you think the people of all things should be able to choose who will lead them???

Burke, I agree with some parts of your comments. I think the electors from each state should cast their vote towards the candidate that their district selected. The winner takes all rule is quite illogical.
That being said, the design of the electoral college was very wise in its conception. Back in the early days of this nation, the system was set up so after casting ballots in the election, each state sent their electors back to DC to cast their votes. They were to be selected as learned men, who represented their electoral district and once back in DC, when they would see the candidates (pre-mass media days) if they determined them unfit for office could cast their vote for another candidate. Yet another safeguard our Founding Fathers designed into the system.
If it wasn't "winner take all" in most states the elections would be tremendously different. Look and California with 54 of them always going to the Democrats.

I'll agree the system needs overhaul. I also agree that the system of "winner take all" is the problem. Here in Oregon we have 2 counties that determine all of Oregon's vote. Usually EVERY other county votes opposite but they get to determine where our electoral votes go. I'd like to see them divvied up accordingly to the percentages of the state vote or maybe by whoever wins more counties? Pure popular vote and related systems lead to congress/presidents catering to big city voters and screwing everyone else. It's all a quest for votes.

Yep, and part of the idea of the electoral college was to spread the voting power out geographically, so a few small areas with high populations would not rule the rest of the land. None of this will probably ever change though, the power players run all this stuff look at gerrymandered voter districts.

Canada has different priorities than the States. We find free healthcare and social spending more important than having a huge military. I'll be the first to admit our military isn't up to par; but we can't have the best of everything.
Honestly though, what are the chances of a large scale attack on Canada or the US for that matter. Terrorism really isn't even as much a threat as people would like to think...
Also, noone really hates us(Canada) because we don't make ememies... (Don't take that personally.)
One fact of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 was that the "war on terror" doesn't have much to do with terrorism. Another fact was that Bush guaranteed the American people that there were WMDs in Iraq(the whole "purpose" for invading in the first place), and to this day, none have been found.
And by the way, many high-ranking Canadian polititians wanted to join the coalition(as did I) but the majority of Canadian people did not...this is afterall, a democracy(ruled by many - the people)
And I won't throw you into the emotional group; that was just a general observation as I read through the posts...

Tmlman......Terrorism is not as much as a threat as people think????? Try telling that to the families that had people in the WTC...or flight 93...or the Pentagon. We lost more people there than at Pearl Harbor......A far as the WMDS...I that was a decision made on Intel. The Brits said they were there and even the Russians did.I for one believe they were.My fear is where did they go??......Syria would be my first guess. I will tell my Grandfathers that fought in Germany that they should have not been there pissing them off......Or the brits.....maybe they would have enjoyed driving Volkswagens??? What the hell were we thinking???? Tell me one time where you think we have just went out trying to make someone mad??? hmmm...I guess after a while no one likes feeling like a little brother.

If fact, alot of the AL Queda members have been captured. We totally bombed the hell out of Afghanistan (terror training camp capital of the world) and are still looking for Osama.
Iraq has a wmd program. Clinton admitted to it, Kerry admitted to it. The UN admitted to it. The weapons were moved before the invasion took place. Sound too hard to beleive? Its not really. It may have not been 20,000 warheads or anything like that - the FACT is that the UN resolution said that they could not develop the program; in fact i think it was tied to the end of the gulf war in 1991. Saddam defied this resolution time and time again and HE kept playng cat and mouse games with the inspectors for years, eventually kicking them out for good. Remember that? People seem to forget that. Sounds like he was hiding soemthing. Its the kinda game a child plays when he doenst want you to find soemthing....
Clinton politically chose not to go in but his inntelligence reported had the program and the weapons.
Some how people forget all this in their hate-quest for Bush. In fact, right after BUSH invaded IRAQ, CLINTON called into a Larry King show and suported the war and said he should have gone in himself... Find that transcript if you can.

U.S. move fuels fears over dune plant
HABITAT: A cut in proposed land threatens the Peirson's milk-vetch, environmentalists say.
01:10 AM PDT on Wednesday, August 4, 2004
By JENNIFER BOWLES / The Press-Enterprise
At the California desert's most popular off-roading area, the Bush administration on Tuesday reduced by 60 percent the amount of land considered critical for the survival of a threatened plant.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service dropped most off-roading areas from its final habitat designation, thus removing these areas from potential closures due to habitat impact. Instead, the agency placed most of the habitat in a wilderness area of the 160,000-acre Imperial Sand Dunes that already bans motorized vehicles.

Little Johnny -
A teacher in a small Vermont town asks her class how many of them are John Kerry fans. Not really knowing what a John Kerry fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raise their hands except one boy. The teacher asks Johnny why he has decided to be different. Johnny says, "I'm not a John Kerry fan." The teacher says, "Why aren't you a John Kerry fan?" Johnny says, "I'm a George Bush fan." The teacher asks why he's a George Bush fan. The boy says, "Well, my mom's a George Bush fan and my dad's a George Bush fan, so I'm a George Bush fan!" The teacher is kind of angry, because this IS Vermont, so she asks, "What if your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?" Johnny says, "That would make me a John Kerry fan."

If I was elected president I'd:
1. downsize government immediatly
2. cut government spending
3. lower taxes
4. get rid of gun control but support the safe use of firearms. any weapon the government has access to the people of america should have access to (besides nukes).
5. threaten to nuke iraq unless they decide to cooperate with the U.S.
6. allow queers to get married, but give them no special tax breaks for being married and not allow them to adopt kids.
7. throw out wellfare
8. get rid of government funded health care.
9. invest government spending on making american made products cheaper than products from overseas.
10. drill for oil in alaska
11. get rid of foreign dependence
12. get rid of social security
13. get rid of the epa
14. drop out of the u.n.
15. get rid of the income tax. make it a flat 10% for everyone. the robinhood mentality has gotten out of control.
16. america cares about america only. foreign affairs that don't directly effect the U.S. are to be left alone.
17. tighter security around U.S. borders. We don't need anymore people than we already have.
18. prostitution is made legal. If a guy wants to pay for some ***** than by God let him. If he ends up with an std afterward, it's his fault for pickin up a hooker.
19. ban stupid lawsuits. you can't sue macdonalds for making you fat. did they force you to order supersize fries?
20. legalize drugs. tax them like regular products. it would get rid of alot of crime and people know the stuff is bad for them. If they choose to shoot herion and become an addict, so be it. Just more cash going into the pocket of the government.
