Default Grizz using oil

I have an 04 Grizz with 45 hours on it. At 25 hours I changed the oil and filled it with Amsoil 0w-40. I just checked my oil and it was a little low and I added some. One dealer told me it is normal with synthetic while another dealer told me I shouldn't be using synthetic this soon. Anyone elses Grizz use oil ?? Mine doesn't smoke or anything and it only needed about 3 ozs, But I would think it shouldn't use any. I do ride it kind of hard.

Maybe it has something to do with 0w weight oil in the summer. Next oil change try 10w 40 and see if the consumption goes down.

The Dealer is full of beans. That an engine can't break in with synthetic oil is old school thought over new school technology. Many an engine come right from the factory with synthetic oil as the first and only to be put in the engine.

If you were only 3 ozs low, how much oil did you add after you changed the oil and filter? Did you add enough to make up for the dry filter?

The other question that I have is why you used 0w40 when the book for an 03 specs 20w40?
Is the 04 engine spec different?

Just because the oil is synthetic it does not protect the engine if the wrong grade of oil is used. I have seen engines ruined because of this. If 0w40 was not the spec and there is damage you will void your warranty. It is easy to determine abuse from lack of lubrication in an engine.

The amsoil says it replaces 5w-30, 10w-30 and 10w-40. My owners manual says I can use 10w-40 or 20w-40 for up to 90 degrees. Once the oil is warm there is no difference in the weight of 10w-40, 20w-40 or 0w-40, They are all 40 weight.

Default Grizz using oil

I have used Amsoil 10w-40 in my Grizzly 660 for two year with out a problem. The only time I used a little oil was when I was rejetting to compensate for a new exhaust and the inside of it was hot yellow. I have since richend up my machine and it doesn't use any more oil. I have read alot of posts where the grizzly will use a little oil for normal use.

Default Grizz using oil

Mine was about a quart low from what I could tell last change. And it only holds a little over 2 quarts anyway. I freaked out at first, and then noticed that it had been over a year since my last change. Guess I didn't put a lot of miles on it last year. Maybe 500 total. But I use Yamalube 10-50 synthetic if it means anything.

My 02' 660 Grizz has always used a little oil. Same with my friend's 02' Grizz. On WOT take off we both get just a little black smoke that's fuel but, when one of us drops the throttle at high RPM then we get a puff of blue, that's oil. I also get some oil in the air box from the breather tube. I always figured it as normal since there was a Grizz same as mine that did the same thing. They still run good just check the oil before you ride.
