Grizzly charging system???
#1
Hey everyone, I've got an '03 Grizz that's not charging the battery like it should. It only puts out about half a volt running above what the battery voltage is when it's not running. While this is fine riding in the daytime, you can imagine I can't get very far trying to go on a night ride. My question is where is the alternator on this thing? I've checked all the fuses under the seat and they're all ok. I guess my next step will be finding a parts manual somewhere.
Thanks, Dave

When you checked the voltage while running, was it idleing? If so, thats not bad. Check it again, at about 4000 rpm. The stators, are a bit different than an alternator, they depend on rpm to get to max output. And as long as youre getting more than resting( key off) voltage, you should be ok. Then turn on every thing electrical, such as lights and hand warmers , and run it at 4000 rpm, it should still pump out more than resting voltage.
Are you haveing any battery rundown problems? or dim lights?

Thanks for the reply. And yes, that's exactly how I noticed the problem. We went out on a night ride and noticed how dim the lights got after awhile (boy it sucks pull starting the Grizzly!). On my '03 Kodiak while at an idle, it puts out about 14 volts....the grizz barely over 12. Turn the lights on and rev it up even and it doesn't even put out 12!
So does anyone know if there's a main circuit breaker or fuse?
Thanks for any help

Has the battery been load tested? It could have an internal short.
Theres an easier way to get the grizzly started than pulling the rope, if you have someone else along. Hook up a strap and bump start it. Put it in high, turn on the key, and have someone drag you to about 7mph, and itll start right up.

basslips,I would check the regulator that is located in the rear under the left side next to the vent tube.Sometimes its called a rectifier.I put a hi-performance one on and the battery keep getting low and woouldn't start.I re-checked the connection and it wasnt all the way on.This could be the problem. If that doesn't do it then trying charging the battery ovrnite and see what happens..
