I need some advice on a few problems with an 88 blaster just bought: 1) when it starts it won't idle on its own without giving it gas, but once it warms up it idles way too high, how do I adjust this, I don't know if it is just a matter of the idle adjustment screw, which I can't find, or something else. 2) the left side of the motor leaks around the black plastic cover, it leaks some oil and occasionaly puffs some smoke out, I tried re-sealing the gasket, what else can I do and what is causing this?? 3) How do I check the tranny oil, there is a fill hole, but no dipstick on it, and how often should the tranny oil be changed and what kind of oil should be used?? Thanks in advance!!

you have an air leak first fix the leak and then worry about the idle dont ride it untill you fix the leak or you will burn up the engine

it does sound like you have an air leak. perform a leak down test to find out where. there is no oil in the left side behind the black cover just the electrical, if anything is leaking from there take off the cover and check to see whats in there if its water clean it out and check your wire connections to see if they have rusted or corroded, on the right hand side look down next to the foot peg more towards the left side of the peg there is a sight glass chances are it is plugged with mud, dirt, etc so clean off the lens and your oil should be between the two marks which are on the black housing .

if your 88 is like the new model, remove the seat to adj. the idle speed, you'll see a big screw slot, thats it!!!
