Just wondering some thoughts about it, if you havent seen the packet it is really goood info, course is about 13 to 15 months..1 year not too bad, come out a Motorcycle tech. specialist(33 week course) , with an ellective of either a yamaha ,suzuki, honda, etc.etc technician.....alll of the companys and harly too..(12 weeks).

Get you into a house and job while in school and grants to pay for school. After that they have job placement. Im only 25 and i think i could live with making peoples quads go fast for fun or any other avenue of the atv scene, management, sales, building, racing. I hope i can do the quad thing for life, I really enjoy it. With a few more years the market well explode , mark my words it will change like the motorcross and freestyle. No more $10 gate fees at Glen Heled in So cal.. there will be allot of oppettunitioes in the ATV /Motorcyle/Drag industry.

Just make sure this is REALLY what you want to do. I went to a school just like that for Automotive and diesel (AAI) Arizona Automotive Instutute and just like MMI they set you up you go to school and when you done they line you up a job. The reason I say make sure this is what you want to do is because you just finished your bike and have probably messed with a few others but in the real work depending where you get a job performance bikes might not be all your working on and ten recons in a row or 5 blasters and so on. Being a mechanic is a great job and money is great but it gets old very quick. Depending what field you get into wrenching takes a toll on your body very quickly. On the flip side I think you should do it living in Cali there are so many performance shops that working on JUST bad a$$ race and drag bikes could be what you do all the time and that would be awsome.

Go for it.

Amen to that Pat. Wrenching does get old very quick. What started out as a hobby 8 years ago has been my occupation for 4 years. Very expensive to get into and you will not want to go home after work and do your own stuff for fun. As for school, I dont agree. I went to UTI in Phoenix and made in 12 weeks. I got started at a Ford dealer before I went to school and the factory training awesome. Maybe look into this route. Find a Yamaha or other large dealer and see what they offer for training. Great part is you get paid to train and it is all hands on.

My friend is leaving for MMI today! I think that being a mechanic for a living could get old very fast, but if you find the right place to work it would be the job of a lifetime. If you have any questions, PM me and I'll give you his phone number.

I am considering attending MMI also. Is there anyone else that has gone that would like to enlighten us? Are there any other schools that offer Motorcyle/ATV technician training? Sorry for bumping an old post, but didn't wanna start a new one.

All I can say is I grew up swinging a hammer, now I don't and I like it much better this way. Get my point.

I graduated from MMI about 4 years ago and i do have to say that it was worth it and i did learn alot. Ive been working at the same harley dealer for 3 years and 8 months, and in that time ive learned even more and am now making pretty good money. Now with that said i am also currently in the process of becoming a corrections officer because even though i make good money there is way better money to be had and i am also sick of hating something that i once loved. Thats right after about 2 years or so i was pretty much tired of my harley and thats a very sad thing. So if u really enjoy whatever DONT do it as your job. I spend more time and more money riding and wrenching on my rappy and my buddies yfz now than i do on my poor harley and its just cause im pretty much sick of seeing them all day every day. As for MMI itself u get out of it what u put in. If u sortta just get by then u be a sortta qualified mechanic. If u work had and really learn what they have to teach then youll be a decent wrench. I dont think anyone failed when i was there and we have hired 2 more students after me and neither one of them lasted more than a month. So think long and hard about what u really want and if your really willing to learn or just looking for something to do thats not college!

i went to mmi and uti and must agree with pats you got to love it because its not a glamorus job with not to many perks. i work on my own and some buddiesfor beer money. but swing a wrench isnt going to get you the big chips. i make more money swinging a hammer than a wrench. figure about 3xs as much. so before you take that loan on your firstborn or your inharretance make sure its fore you. and if you go down to Mill ave.
remember not to tell the girls that you are a techer or you will be play with your pecker and not them

Thanks for the info fellas. I know that after awhile I will get bored but I can't think of any job where that wouldn't happen. And even if I did get bored fixing someone else's quads, I could venture into fabrication and performance mods, plus my buddy's going to college to learn business stuff(can't remember exact classes), and wants to open his own shop when he gets out and wants me to get in on the deal, so I think this would be a good way for me to expand my knowledge of repair. hogman, just outta curiosity, would you mind PMing me an approx salary. I've never found any sort of average salary figure for motorcycle techs. If not, no big deal.
