striping paint off frame
#1
What would be the best way to get the paint off of a Raptor frame? Im wanting to paint it, but would like to strip the old off first. I thought about sandblastin it, but dont want any pits in the metal.

Unless the factory paint is chipping/flaking/peeling, you don't need to remove it if you're going to use paint on your frame. Scuff the factory paint and make sure all the welds are clean (wire brush) before applying a good primer and top coat. If you are going to have the frame PC'd, all the old paint must come off. Most places use a sand blaster to remove old paint. Depending on the pressure and abrasive media, a sand blaster won't necessarily pit the underlying metal.

When I did my frame, I used a sandblaster with silica sand. It did not pit the frame at all.
Areas that had good paint on them were left alone. After the sand blast, I went over the whole frame with fine steel wool...then soap and water. And finally an air gun to dry it quickly.
It's been a few years and things are still holding up just fine.

Sand blast it......we do old tractors all the time(including hoods and fenders, which must look good and smooth) and we sandblast all of the old rusty paint off of them......the main thing is to use a small sandblaster(not some huge thing that can blow through concrete) and also use silica sand.......After that, it is all easy......If you are just going to paint it, why not just scuff up the paint and prime and repaint it??
