Ohh.. I forgot to mention the hassle of rebuilding the bottom end of the motor. It is kinda a pain in the ***, but with a manual it's not all that bad. I just did mine about 6 weeks ago. But I still think you're much better off to rebuild your motor than to buy a used one. If everything inside your motor is new, then it should last, buy a used one and you could get the same problem all over again.

My motor is on its way from Mission Yamaha. Cost $1100 for new welded and trued crank with hot rods-new seals, bored cylinders, new pistons-rings,all necessary gaskets for the rebuild and a bottom case port job, the cylinders were already ported. It should scream after this. I worked with someone that had done a bottom end before and it wasn,t that bad at all. I hope to get it early next week.

97 Banshee in a 100 pieces also has after market, A arms, shocks, swing arm, 2 to 1 carb, 2 to 1 pipe, cool head, ceet seat, renthal bars, powder coat frame

noticed that in your profile your aftermarket parts you have a-arms, do you still have the stock ones? Im lookin for the upper part.

This sucks, its gonna be alot of money.. if I do it I should do it right so this does not happen again. Is taking the crank out alot more complex then taking the top end apart? That was pretty easy but Im kind of scared to crack the bottom end open. Im thinking about cleaning up all the pieces and painting them,exc.. while this thing is apart..

No I bought it that way. I wish I had some of the parts. I would like to put the stock carbs back on.

brokemybanshee,
By all outward appearances you have got the worst Banshee on the forum. I'm not trying to start an arguement. I've been in exactly the same position as you are now, except it was 15 yrs ago.
My suggestion is this...
Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle from top to bottom. On the left side make a list of "Must haves". This column will contain ALL of the cheapest, easiest to obtain parts that are NEEDED just to get your Banshee running.
In the right column list all of your "Wants".
This column will contain all of the parts that are needed to get it running the way you want it to run, including all the upgrades you want to make. Including cosmetic work. Next to each item you will put a dollar amount and the time it will take YOU to install the parts.
At the bottom of each column total it up.
Compare the dollar amounts to your CASH ON HAND and the amount of time you want to spend working on it.
If you don't have enough money on hand to complete the "Must Have" list, then give up. I found that there are not enough hours in the day to work on a junker that I don't have the money to fix. It will only make you bitter AND poor. My gut feeling is that you would be better off stripping it down, selling the few good parts that are left, work some overtime during the winter and buy something a lot newer in the spring.
It might be handy too if you posted a picture of the entire quad so everyone here can give better advice.

brokemybanshee,
It's good to see that you can find humor in all of this. Somehow I knew you wouldn't give up on it. (I didn't give up on mine either).
Since you are determined to plunge headlong into this nearly impossible task, I would like to make 1 final suggestion...

shorten your screen name to "broke".

Keep the faith brother, you'll need it!

PS. post a list of the "must haves" and maybe you can get some ideas where to get good deals on the parts you need from the forum. Of course you would not use this posting to solicite bids for parts since that is what the free classifieds are for. (right atvbbs?)
