Took my banshee apart... Oh, no.............

Well started taking my banshee apart, took the head/cylinders off, head is all done, cylinders are all done, busted a lifter off the crank, scratched the crank, Basically its all messed up. Chunks of metal in the pipe... Here are a couple pictures http://www.geocities.com/yamahabanshee96/left.jpg

Any advice? Think its salvagable?

All I have to say is... What the heck is a lifter??? Do you have a four stroke Banshee? That would be really cool. Could you imagine the incredible torque that it would produce? Wow, what a great idea.
Seems to me that your motor sort of... blew up.
I like the pics though. Too bad you don't have a .wav file of your banshee grenading....

Yeah the motor blew up. Seems the guy that I bought it off from screwed me pretty good. Looks like when the motor was rebuilt they diddnt bother to change the pisons or anything just put in new rings. I wish I would have been beating on it when it broke.... I would have thought that would have been a big bang or crash whatever when it broke? but just sounded like the muffler fell off. You should have seen the chunks of metal that came out of the pipe. Metal pieces all through the crank... big mess.

Broke if your thinking about rebuilding it I would advise not to and just buy a used motor from either eastcoastatv or kandk. If your motor looks anything like that rod and both pistons I would just replace the motor. You can ship it to a shop and have them upgrade the thing and rebuild it at the same time but it will cost a lot of money. Do what you have the money for...

Have you thought about changing to the 460 block now that the 350 seems to be toast? From what I've read, it seems like an excelent upgrade... Youl have to do some research on it, i dont know too much about what is involved.
Just a thought.

basically Im lookin for the cheapest way out of this. But Id also like to do it right. Should I take the time and tear it all down? Man this sucks...... basically Im lookin at dumping a LOT of money that I dont have.... wonderful.. I need advice.. think I should just bore this sucker out and run it? Also do you have to be a genius to take the crank out? I am by no means a mechanic but the top end was really easy.. anybody done this? HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!

OUCH!!! That looks painful both mechanically and $$$$. If your cases are still OK you can look at the bright side. This is the perfect opportunity for a big bore kit. I would definitely rebuild it and not replace it with another stock motor. A used stocker can run from aprox. $1000-$1500 and new about $2500, you may find one for less if you are lucky. For that kind of money you can rebuild with choice components. For example, a big bore kit with new pistons and sleeves from Vito’s goes for approx. $470+ maybe $200? to install the sleeves and fit the pistons. A new crank assembly is about $530 or less if yours is rebuildable? If you are confident you can install the above parts for about $1200 + $40 for a Yamaha shop manual and aprox. $100 miscellaneous stuff, new reads ect. So say you can put it together for about $1400 or have a shop do it for about $1600. That is the same cost as good used motor. But your motor would not be used. It would be fresh and much more Powerful. Heck many people who have perfectly good banshees spend those kind of $$ on their motors just to beat their friends. I admit it’s a lot but you will probably spend it either way. This is just my opinion and my labor prices may be way off. Just something to think about and maybe check into more yourself. Good luck

I am a mechanic at a yamaha shop and all i have to say is that banshees are no fun to rebuild and man are they expessive my one suggestion is to see if your local dealer is a parts unlimited distributer they cary an aftermarket crank assembly that is way cheaper than stock (you will need the whole crank trust me) also this project is doable yourself if you take your time and have a good service manual. oh yeah when thinking about hopping your motor up just concider what this is is going to cost and then know that modified banshees break way easyer than stock.

hey broke my banshee...
I've been here.. done this, I don't think you're really all that bad off.. considering all. Call magic racing (1.800.999.4594)for a new crank and connecting rods. They sell the entire crank assembly with all NEW bearings, "HOT ROD" connecting rods, and wrist pin bearings for $399. It's an aftermarket Wiseco crank with EVERYTHING YOU NEED. You're cylinders should be able to be bored out, runs about $45 a cylinder. If your head is really bad I have a perfect stock one I'll sell you for $50, or you can buy and after market ProDesign Cool Head for around $269.00. Add a set of pistons at $159 and you could basically have a new motor from $700.00 to $920 depending on what you do with the head.
The big question is how deep are the grooves in the cylinders and can they bored out??
Good luck..
