Default What Kind of Grease?

It's time to grease up the zerks!

What kind of grease do I need for the grease gun? Lithium or Moly? both? I am talking about the Walmart/local autozone kind not yamaha's brand...

I searched the forum on this topic but came up with the big zero...

Can someone help me out?

Thanks Guys,

E

it's supposed to be a lithium soap based grease, but a synthetic will work as well. Commonly available wal-mart style synthetic is Valvoline Synpower grease. Should work well. I use amsoil synthetic grease.

P, Thanks for the shout back... I did check the manual and it refered to a soap based lithium grease...

Lightman, Thanks for the shout back... amsoil...how do you like it? does it hold up?

I think I will go for the Valvoline Synpower grease... unless the amsoil is better?

Thanks for the replies!

Funny...I can't use P's full name or I get a message warning....

Lowend - I prefer the amsoil grease. Only because I know that the amsoil motor oils are superior to valvoline's and I assume the same. Valvoline oils , like castrol syntec, are not 'true synthetics' because they start with a petroleum base (group 3 oils). True synthetics like Mobil 1, Amsoil, Redline, etc are made with PAO/Ester fully synthetic base stocks. For this reason , I deduce that Amsoil's synthetic grease is better than Valvoline's.

On a serious note - I am fully convinced that your regular $2/tube lithium grease will work perfectly, so I don't think you can really go wrong either way..

If you ride through quite a few puddles than just go with the basic 2.00 tubes of lithium. You'll still want to grease it every couple of rides if you have zerks, just to force any water out. If I didn't have zerks I would go with the synthetic, since greasing up the arms can be more of a hassle, and you want a grease that will break down in about 1 1/2 to twice as long. For bearings that mobil1 synthetic hi temp red grease worked very well for me.

I've used nothing but Mobil 1 and never had any problems in any conditions. It's the best all around for the price grease.

Hey Vegas! Thanks for the shout back...

Trailer info... It is a Car-mate CM708ATV trailer... Here are the specs...

Deck Length 8’ 6”
Deck Width 79 1/2”
Rail Height 4”
Platform Height 24”
Hitch Height 18”
Coupler Size 2”
Axle 1 - 2000
GVWR 1800#
Frame Size 2” x 2” Tube
Tongue Straight
Floor Material Steel Mesh
Tires 18.5 x 8.5 x 8 C Range
Electric Plug 4 Way Flat Connector

You can fit two of just about anything on it.

2 sport
2 UTE
1 Sport + 1 UTE
1 Sport + 1 Bike

You get the picture...

I looked at your profile and the only drawback I could see is that you may want to put three or the whole family on and this will not meet those needs.
If you got this carmate 8ft you would be stuck with only two. The trailer ran approx $800. I had to pay MD Tax and Tags so Imine out the door was $1100 with a spare tire.

You could opt for the 12ft. this would allow for three and it is only $500 more.

I love my trailer! It is steel mesh so everything but the larger rocks fall righ through when washing them off right on the trailer.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Guys for the great info on grease.

Sounds like Lithium will do but the Amsiol and Mobil one synth are a bit better. Either way as long as it is Lithuim and Moly synth it should be okay. Right?

Thanks for the replies!
