Problem with 05 IRS Kodiak 450's
Guys, I had my quad in the dealer for the 20 hr service because they seem to believe my extended warranty will only be honored if I had it.. so whatever I got that, and will do the rest of them myself. Apparently the exhaust valve was a little tight, they do check and put the valves in proper spec. It seems to be running a bit better. The biggest breakthrough was he fixed my squeaking brake! I've had the quad thru water mud and 20 mile ride and the squeak is gone. He said that the brake was just set way too tight, he couldn't believe it got thru PDI like that... Goes to show they probably whip them together as quickly as possible and don't pay much attn. My guess is the brakes all came too tight from the factory. Just for what it's worth..

I got my 100 mile service for free. Well at least I had them adjust my valves for free. I just took in in saying the motor seemed to be rattleing and to check my valves. SO they did that for free. Of course I changed my oil my self. They charged me for a sparkplug $2.99. Also right nowI have about 200 miles on mine. The rear brakes did squeak when I first got it. They don't squeak any more or if they do its usually not much. When I clean it I just be sure I spray alot of water into the rear brake behind the wheel. I put a UNI air filter on mine since it seemed very rich. My spark plugs were black. Now it seems like it might be to lean? I get an once in a blue moon deceleration backfire and the sparkplug is just slightly dark now. It does seem to have alot more power now since its broke in. It takes off and sounds like a beast now. I am very happy with my purchase still.

just one question... if your brake was too tight what did he do to loosen it up? please fill us in... i have 500 km on my machine now... and with my stockers on, i can pull wheelies almost at will.... from a start that is..... with my zillas on... a little harder, but usually i can get them up in the air!!

Pull wheelies at will? Are you talking about in low gear while pulling back on the bars? I love how you guys are all going on about how fast the kodiak is. I mean it's a great machine but it's no rocket.
I'll have to ask the tech which exact part of the brakes were too tight. I don't plan on going to that dealership anytime soon, so if the brake squealing is driving you crazy, look up the number for Northshore (one word) yamaha in eastlake ohio, and ask for the tech named Kevin. He sounded like it was so obvious that I was skeptical of the fix - however after that 16 mile ride thru woods/mud/water, no squeal. I did notice the brake lever is much easier to pull now..

Misery you said you can pull wheelies at will and I was wondering if you have a winch on yours? I have tryed to pull wheelies but just can't get it up. I think it may because I have a winch on mine and it adds considerable weight to the front of the kodiak. Also what is everone running there shock preload adjust level at? I left mine in the back set what the factory had and made the front one level stiffer. And I'm running about 5 PSI in my tires. Seems like she rides and handeles good but I don't know if this is the best combination. The rear seems real soft and the front alot stiffer.

Wheelies on a Kodiak 450? You must have a magic Kodiak there, LOL, because the Kodiak 450 my wife rides is a gutless wonder. I don't think our Kodiak could get the front tires off the ground if it drove over a land mine. It has a nice torquey motor, but it just doesn't have the snap needed to do "wheelies at will", ... not even close. But although it doesn't wheelie, it does vibrate so bad that your feet go numb on the floorboards, and the brakes squeak, and we needed to swap out all of the suspension grease zerks in order to grease the suspension. Other than that it is a nice little quad .

Like i said i can pull wheelies with my stock tires on.... next time i put them on, i will get someone to take pics of me doing wheelies, so you guys can all see.... I can get the front up every once and a while with the zillas on, but it is very hard to.... PS i just have to have all my weight on the back.... and yeah, most of the time i am in LOW gear.... but i can get it up in high every once and a while.... these wheelies aren't while i am moving fast... And yes i have a winch..... it should have even more grab when i put on my EPI clutch kit.
Plus i never said how fast mine is... because it isn't... not fast at all, has good power... but no speed.... i get passed by every one... my ABSOLUTE fastest was 85 kmh..... which i think is slow to the 100-110 kmh of a grizz
As for shocks i have all mine set on the Stiffest level... and i feel like putting spares in.... to stiffen it up more.... i usually ride double so the back is sagging a little....
