Default 05 Kodiak 450 Winch Install

Finally got my winch today.

The guy that sold it to me said we're still waiting on the mount kit, but to go ahead and take the winch home.

I get it home and it looks to me like there is no need for a mount kit, as there are flanges on the front bull bar that look like they're for the winch.

Took off the front bar, and sure enough the winch and fairlead bolt right on.

So I got it bolted on. Now I'm wondering the best place to mount the contactor.

Where's ya'lls mounted at or where's the best place to put this thing?

Thanks!

Jody S.

i put a superwinch 2000 on my dads and i put the switch on his front rack above the left fender i wanted to put it on the handle bars but the switch looked tacky on them it was far to big but i did want it some were so you could use the gas and work the winch at the same time in cases were he wanted to stay on it but it works great on his rack

thanks 2fast, but I'm wondering where to mount the contactor or solenoid may be a better description, but I'm not sure.

The big black box that all the 6awg wire connects to. Where's a good hiding spot for that?

tnx again,

JS

Which winch do you have. I have the 2500 on my Griz. I put mine on the forward wall of the storage box under the seat. It works fine and stays dry. Also, I hooked the small power wire to the headlight low beam.
You will be better off if you still get the plate to mount your winch to. It displaces the preasure on your frame and you are less likely to bend something if you are winching a real heavy load.

I put the 2.5 warn on my 05 450, ended up putting the contactor in the dry box, drilled through the side for the wires and sealed around them, seem to have worked out well.

On my Grizz I put the contactor under the front rack by the snorkle for the belt case. The kodiak is probably the same. I took the rack off and removed the center fender cover and mounted it in there. I wanted to keep it out of my storage box and even though the intructions say keep it as close to the battery as possible the dealer said that is where they put them. Mine works great, doesn't get wet and doesn't use any storage space.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I looked under the front rack, in the pocket where the duct is for the belt case, and it is as described like the Grizzly.

I ended up putting it in the rear dry box, as the wires that are included in the winch are too short to reach the battery if you mount it up front. I know I could have used the longer set of wires for the battery, and the shorter set to go from the contactor to the winch, but I have some concerns about the voltage/current drop with the length of the wires connecting to the battery. I'm sure it's fine, but I figure I'll play it safe.

I don't figure on using the rear box for much of anything anyway, and there still seems to be ample space.

Thanks a bunch dudes!

When your winch plate comes in you should be able to slip it in from the bottom once you remove the skid plate. just unbolt the winch slide it to the left and you should e able to slip it in. it is tight but i will fit. Just for imformation the dealer installs the controller on the outside back of the Storage compartment (just to save storage room) They are made to work in wet enviroments.

I really don't understand what this plate is.

The fairlead mount fits under the winch. It's 1/4" thick, and bolts underneath the winch, and onto the metal tabs that are welded to the front brushguard. There is no more clearance to sandwich anything under the winch as there is only about 1/8" clearance from the top of the winch motor and the brushguard mount.

Kind of hard to describe, but there's no way another plate's going to fit under the winch as I see it.

I could take some digital pic's and post here, but so far I haven't figured out how to do that.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I will relocate the contactor box, but I've already mounted it to the side of the rear dry box. Four more holes in there and my dry box is going to look like swiss cheese.

Regards,
JS

I LOOKS JUST ABOUGHT THE SAME IT REPLACES THE PLATE U HAVE ON THERE NOW. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT I COMES ALOT HIGHER IN THE FRONT AND U HAVE TWO U BOLTS THAT BOLT TO THE FRONT BUMPER BAR THAT IS RIGHT ABOVE THE WINCH. WHEN U PUT IT IN THE FRONT OF THE PLATE GOES JUST BEHIND THE FRONT BUMPER CROSS BAR. IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE ? E-MAIL ME AT SCOTTCOLLEEN@MSN.COM
