I just got my 05 Grizzly this week. I haven't even got to ride it yet besides around the yard. Anyway, the first thing I did was check the oil before I started it and it didn't mark anything, but if you looked down in there you could tell that there was some oil. The manual said that to check the oil properly you must start the engine, and warm it up several minutes, then shut it down and let it settle, then check it without screwing in the dipstick/cap. Well, I finally started it and rode it around the yard real quick then checked it. It marked a little tiny bit. Then I took it for another couple spins, and when I finally parked it, I checked it again, and it marked fine, right at the top of the cross hatches.
So my question is: Is this normal??? I know this is how the manual says to check it, but I've never seen an engine where you won't get an accurate reading till it's warm?! I used to have a 99 big bear and it checked fine when cold. Is it because of the fact that the engine oil has something to do with the automatic? Thanks in advance, sorry for the long post...

 

Motors that have a dry sump, need to be run and then checked while warm. This is to ensure oil has returned to the tank. I believe the grizzly is a wet sump, and checking when cold , on a level surface should be just fine.
If you start it cold, and the oil hasnt warmed up enough, itll drain real slow, and thats why you saw low oil, the first time.

Just screw the dipstick in when it's cold to check the oil, if it's warm then don't screw it in. Make sure you change the Oil alot at first and I reccomd you break it in someplace other than your yard
