It depends on your riding style and conditions, but 2 strokes do not need a new top end rebuild every year. You have been misinformed.
Now, if you have a high compression race machine with aggresive porting you do need to replace the top end more often, but only when compression begins to drop below a certain limit.
My cousin's 01 banshee is still running the stock pistons and rings, as is my friends 02.
Just dont hold it wide open and blow it up and you can go a long time on a set of rings and piston.
